Deloitte UK to increase support for students throughout university

As one of the UK's leading professional services firm, Deloitte is constantly looking at different ways to attract the best talent into the company, whether that be straight from school, or after university.

Deloitte is increasing the number of places on its unique scholar programme, which provides students with work and business experience, the opportunity to travel the world and on-going financial support throughout their degree.

After completing A-levels, successful applicants embark on a 30-week paid placement in a UK Deloitte office where they will work on a wide variety of high-profile clients and gain real ‘hands-on’ experience. Scholar places are available in the following regional offices: Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Leeds, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Reading and St Albans.

After the 30-week work placement at Deloitte, the scholar is awarded a £1,500 bursary to engage in world travel or volunteering abroad to develop their independence and life experience. After this, the student will begin their degree studies and will be provided with an annual £1,500 bursary towards their academic fees. They will also have a guaranteed minimum 4-week paid work placement during every year of their degree. The work placement can be in different departments at the firm to further develop the student’s business knowledge and to increase their employability.

Paul Stephenson, head of graduate recruitment at Deloitte, said: “We understand that not all school leavers are the same and we want to treat them as individuals. We have therefore worked on different packages, to give students the option to set their own career path with Deloitte.

“50 successful students per year, will be supported by Deloitte through the Scholar Scheme straight from their A-levels through to the start of their career. They will be getting the university experience as well as a minimum of four weeks of paid, hands on work experience with Deloitte each year.”

Whilst at university, the scholars will also have the opportunity to work alongside the Deloitte marketing team on campus presentations that may organised at their university. As a Scholar, the student will be a leader amongst their peer group and act as an ambassador for Deloitte on campus, as well as within the workplace.

Crystal Eisinger, a Deloitte scholar who is studying Social and Political Sciences at Cambridge University, said: “I’ve had a wide variety of work during my gap year and enjoyed an increased level of responsibility. Through different social events and training programmes, I have been able to meet colleagues throughout the firm, and have particularly enjoyed getting involved with community outreach programmes.

“I spent the working part of my gap year in Deloitte’s tax team, where I worked with a leading oil company. I also gained experience in different parts of the firm, including Consulting, and the Public Sector and Financial Services practices.

“The Scholar Scheme is so special because it allows you to grasp the scope of professional services and different industry areas before you apply for a graduate job.”
