This has been covered quite recently. To be frank they are low payers - significantly below market rate. Here's an overview of base salary (add on 4k for car allowance).Associate £28-35k Senior Associate/Executive £35-45k Consultant/Manager £45-55k Senior Consultant/Senior Manager £55-80k Director £80k+

That's fairly accurate... but it's not below market rate (I wish it was). It's very consistent with other Big4 rates.

hmmm ... the Big 4 I used to work for was probably 20% higher, at least for the senior levels (even if you take a PwC Director to be equivalent to a Snr Mgr in my firm).

This explains why they still in business and able to provide a much more stable environment to Consultants.

I recruit for all of the Big 4 and confirm that PWC pay the lowest up to Director level (by a fair margin as well). Once you make Director then you're in a different ball park.

OK, allow me to restore some critical thinking and a degree of intellectual capacity to this thread.1. "This explains why they still in business and able to provide a much more stable environment to Consultants" I assume this refers to the low pay. I believe that au contrare to the point you make, it in fact indicates why the Partners live in big houses, eat at fancy restaurants, go on posh holidays, and drive big expensive cars, whilst the junior ones spend 2 hours a day on moneysavingexpert.com in order to achieve such things as reducing their utility bills by £10.2. "I recruit for all of the Big 4 and confirm that PWC pay the lowest up to Director level (by a fair margin as well)."Well come on then, don't leave us in suspense! How much? Please add some numbers.Thank you.

"I recruit for all of the Big 4 and confirm that PWC pay the lowest up to Director level (by a fair margin as well)."This is BS. The Big4 all pay the same at every grade until Partner - they gather excellent intel on each others payscales and pay distributions, and match accordingly. The same gentlemen's agreement that applies to fees applies to pay. I'm sorry to disappoint anyone who thinks they can get a big payrise by jumping ship to do a near-identical job, in a near-identical firm, but the market doesn't work like that.

Not so sure it is BS. I don't recruit for the Big 4 but coincidentally was offered Manager grade at Deloitte, EY and PWC last year. They offered 64, 63 and 54 respectively. This may just have been an honest assessment of my value to the firm but I was surprised by the PWC offer and challenged this. They feel the quality of their client portfolio outweighs salary. Hmmm.

This has been covered to death - 28656. Yes PWC pay significantly and if you don't like it then don't apply:Manager at EY pays 60-85k base + car (no bonus). Manger (Consultant in PIC) at PwC pays 45-60k + bonus (approx 8k) + benefits (approx 8k, including car) Manager at Deloitte pays 60-80k + bonus (approx 10%) + benefits (approx 8k)

The entire problem comes down to the accounting firms having more than one set of job-titles, which gets very confusing when you get people transferred across groups and practices. There is a difference between the "Manager" job title and the conventional "Manager" role/responsibilities. The pay goes with the role, not the title. The title of "Manager" at PwC and EY corresponds to what most non-Big4 consultancies call "Consultant". It overlaps the "Senior Consultant" and "Manager" titles at Deloitte.End of the day, for a given amount of experience, sales record, responsibility, etc. all of the Big4 pay the same in total (base salary, cash benefits, car allowances, baseline bonus, etc.).

This is quite interesting. Does anyone know whether the auditors at the Big 4 get paid the same salaries as above?

Sorry but i'm confused:"The title of "Manager" at PwC and EY corresponds to what most non-Big4 consultancies call "Consultant". It overlaps the "Senior Consultant" and "Manager" titles at Deloitte."So you agree that the Manager grade is equivalent across PWC, EY & Deloitte, but from what others have said here the pay clearly does not correlate - PWC pay less?

The "Manager" title at EY FAS/BAS does not carry a £60k+ salary band. It is a 45-55k, like PwC. "Managers" in Transaction Services, etc. are a higher band and a 55-70k range would be more appropriate there.

So back round in a circle:Manager at EY pays 60-85k base + car (no bonus). Manager (Consultant in PIC) at PwC pays 45-60k + bonus (approx 8k) + benefits (approx 8k, including car) Manager at Deloitte pays 60-80k + bonus (approx 10%) + benefits (approx 8k)

There are differences in pay between auditing and consulting; and between firms. This is down to one reason really.DAILY CHARGE RATESThe accenture consulting manager who has a daily rate of 1,200 vs the pwc Audit manager charged at 600 per day would obviously have different salaries. You can argue the reasons for this, but it is driven by the market.Again, a client could be willing to pay 3000 a day for the brightest consultant from Bain (and many clients do). This is more than twice the rate of a consultant of similar grade from a Big 4 firm.

While that makes sense for consulting vs audit, if you are comparing similar consulting offerings from the big-4 why should the day rate and associated salary offer be significantly lower? Can anyone confirm the above PWC salaries are broadly right?

It doesn't actually make sense for audit. It's a different business model in audit - much more bottom heavy with more junior staff per director/partner. Similarly consulting is more bottom heavy than the corporate finance or advisory areas.Neither day rate bears any relation to the cost of employing either the consultant or the audit manager in the example, and the difference in salary is largely incidental. It's certainly not proportionate to the day rates. It is merely the least cost you can get suitable people to do the job for in each case.Hence in this Big 4 firm, the tax people get paid best, followed by corporate finance and with consulting/advisory and audit bringing up the rear. The pay differential is no more than about 10% as far as I know.

DCF - sorry but that is wrong. Consulting in BIG 4 get paid way more than audit - more like 20% for similar years at level. I know this because I have worked as a SM in a Big 4 on both sides (3 years ago in Audit and now in Consulting - and at the same sub-level, in the same firm!). Daily rates are a big driver. I'll let someone else dig out the data to show this as I do not have it to hand now...I am sure there is a salary survey somewhere...

You could be right; perhaps it's more than I thought - I never worked in audit. The gap's not so big between corporate finance and consulting, though - although corporate finance seems to pay better bonuses.I think you overstate the importance of daily rates, though. There may be a correlation but you are talking about a difference in daily pay of about £20-30.

There is very little difference between pay bands across audit/CF/advisory groups within the Big4 accountancies. If anything, CF bands are slightly higher than consulting. It's only at partner level than your take-home pay (but not your base salary) starts to vary. At that point, audit pays best (massive margins and leverage compared to consulting and CF).
