Typically when companies offer voluntary redundancy, they cannot offer it only to specific employees. The have to offer it to all of the potentially affected employees. They may be able to set criteria as to who can apply (eg, at least 3 years service, performance rating at average or below, certain service lines only) but beyond that their hands are somewhat tied. The irony with most voluntary redundancy programmes is that while they achieve the stated goals of reducing headcount and cost, they normally do so at the expense of losing some of the higher-performing team members. Those who are likely to find jobs easily elsewhere put their hands up first; lower performers who would struggle to find another job typically don't volunteer.Quite a few of my friends have made a nice packet signing up for voluntary redundancy, then finding a job very quickly afterwards.
