I hear that Unipart has a growing lean practice. Could anyone tell me please some more about this and what its like to work there?

There are worse Lean consultancies out there, however they offer a very standard, specific type of Lean solution that does not work well in aspects of their target market of services. Of course, they think it does work leaving clients with sub-optimal solutions. They also don't pay very well.

I've had many recruiters call me over the last 15 months or so touting on behalf of what turns out to be Unipart. Initially, I was happy to be put forward, and one passed on exemplary documentation on their Values, Philosophy, etc. But I heard no more. When I sought feedback I was told Unipart hadn't responded / had stopped recruiting / stopped Associate work / always blew hot n'cold. I spoke to them directly, attended an Assessment Centre, but got the thumbs down. I was told that although my credentials, experience and capability were fine, I wasn't what their clients were seeking, apparently. I accept that - I know I cannot appeal to all of the people, all of the time. My clients seek improved QCD; competent and confident staff, and a good return on my cost. (Ten-fold, according to one). More recently, another recruiter said Unipart didn't appear to know what they were looking for, and were prone to change their people specs. Time invested on their behalf was not well-spent. I've heard a couple of stories, but don't really know what their USP is, nor what type of individuals they employ - and would be interested to find out!

As with most consultancies, it depends on the people you meet. Unipart bases its approach to lean on the way it has implemented it in its own manufacturing, logistics and rail companies. Unusually, they are big on employee engagement and their lean practitioners like to get their hands dirty working with people on the shop floor as well as senior managers.Don't expect lots of theory or reports, they are primarily practice based and use a lot of visual tools and workshop-based materials. They are always looking for good people, but you do have to do it their way, if you know what I mean.
