It depends on which part of consumer goods you are potentially going into: if it's marketing then it's a no brainer - consumer wins hands down. FMCG marketing is so far ahead of everyone else its the benchmark - MBB targets FMCG marketers at senior levels for lateral hires and with good reason. If you are working on the operational or finance sides, then a stint in MBB will make enormous sense as a leg up. But you'll need to be 100% committed to make the most of the opportunity and put your personal life aside for 2 - 3 years. Within consumer goods I would rank firms like Unilever, P&G, Pepsico (if you join in the Walkers business),Reckitt B and Diageo as every bit as compelling - and high quality - as MBB, and better if you are looking at moving into anything consumer strat orientated - category, insight, marketing, innovations etc. Otherwise go for MBB, get your head down, do 2 - 3 years, then move across to industry with a nice little tier 1 stint to underline your credentials.
