I have just left financial services and have explored options to return to consulting (I started with a big 4 many years ago).I now have offers for working on a consumer goods company (e.g. Unilever) and one of the MBB. I am very indicided which to take. I am worried of the hours of MBB - as I know they are likeley to be 40% more than in industry, and the pay is virtually the same. However I have this nagging thought that if I turn down the MBB I will always live to regret it. I am 30 years old so will be looking to settle down soon with kids and family, things which are important to me.Any advice? Thanks!

'I am 30 years old so will be looking to settle down soon with kids and family, things which are important to me.'Is working for one of the MBB worth more than this? Like you said, it's virtually the same pay and Unilever are not to be sniffed at. I would've thought the decision is a no-brainer.

It depends on which part of consumer goods you are potentially going into: if it's marketing then it's a no brainer - consumer wins hands down. FMCG marketing is so far ahead of everyone else its the benchmark - MBB targets FMCG marketers at senior levels for lateral hires and with good reason. If you are working on the operational or finance sides, then a stint in MBB will make enormous sense as a leg up. But you'll need to be 100% committed to make the most of the opportunity and put your personal life aside for 2 - 3 years. Within consumer goods I would rank firms like Unilever, P&G, Pepsico (if you join in the Walkers business),Reckitt B and Diageo as every bit as compelling - and high quality - as MBB, and better if you are looking at moving into anything consumer strat orientated - category, insight, marketing, innovations etc. Otherwise go for MBB, get your head down, do 2 - 3 years, then move across to industry with a nice little tier 1 stint to underline your credentials.
