Is there any chance for someone with a 2:2 to enter a reputable strategy consultancy/boutique?Can those with a 2:2 and in strategy consultancy/boutique please indicate:1) What firm they are in.2) How many years experience they built up before joining the consultancy.3) What university they got the 2:2 from (this should be indicated by Top 2, Top 10, Top 20 or Others)4) Was there alot of emphasis on the 2:2 at the job interview.Thanks.

Proberbly one of the big four if you're fortunate. Entry through the lowest non graduate position. Can also enter via a support staff position then transfer to client facing role 1-2 years later. I am sssuming your 2:2 is from a reputable university.orYou can wing it with some fancy story at interview stage and luck out.Forget any hope of an MBBB career though.

Hi,What if one has 4.5 years experience working in Strategy within Fortune 500 companies? Does that count for much?

The more experience you have, the less they will look at your university marks.

Thanks, pabs. Does that include the MBBBs?I will still be interested in hearing from those with 2:2 who have done the crossover.

I agree that the more experience you have the less they look at your university degrees but unfortunately they do still look and given the current market situation I don't think it's realistic to expect to get an interview (let alone a job) with the MBBB and you'll be lucky to get one with the Big 4. The market is really tough at the moment. My situation - and I am not trying to brag or big myself up but give you an indication of how tough the market is at the moment. I have a 1st from a top 10 university, 6yrs big 4 consulting experience (consistently highly ranked) having worked in leading Fortune 100 companies, lots of extra curriculars and can't get an interview with any MBBB's and having taken VR from one of the Big 4 (thinking I would stroll into another role easily) can't get into any others at the moment because other than niche areas or entry level recruiting isn't particularly active. I'm currently contracting and waiting for the market to improve. There is no harm in sending applications etc... but if you still have your job in the Fortune 500 company than I would be in no rush to jack it in in the current market. Perhaps wait 12months until things are more steady and then see what happens.I hope this helps as I am not trying to put a downer on your ambitions or be spiteful but I just wanted to give you my recent experiences of the consulting market.

I agree that the current market conditions make any move much more complicated. To get some interviews with MBBB with your profile probably you need a top mba...

Princess you are in fact in the role many MBB alumni aspire to be in after a few years of burn out. My advice is rather than look to MBB, identify the kind of work you want to be doing that you think MBB can give you, and look for that internally or another industry role.

Thanks, All.Anon, were you a strategist in the Big 4? Or are you just trying to shift to strategy now?Sorry to hear you are finding it hard to get a new role. I hope you keep it in mind that it is not because of your quality, it is because of a collapsed economy and quality people can get burnt as well.Mars, thanks. The issue there is that just being an industrial strategist has its draw back. Most strategist from the Big 4 and MBBB when hired get a 30-50% salary premium for doing the same job because they are moving from a high salary job or are they given more senior roles for the same years of experience. It would be nice to go into consulting for about 3 years to get the gloss over that would bump up my potential earnings and make the 2:2 less relevant.

2:2 from Top 20 Uni. Joined a niche strategy consultancy straight from Uni. 2.5 years stint and then moved over to the strategy team of a corporate last year. 80k+ before bonus (30%) and working 9-5. Whilst I did have the benefit of a more favourable market it does show that with a bit of luck and hard work you can do it. Just go and get it.

get a blindingly high GMAT score and then a decent MBA. No one will give a toss about the 2.2

Russell is correct, but remember that this option will cost you many tens of thousands of pounds (not to mention lost earnings in the meantime) and puts you on a conveyor belt for a high-stress lifestyle (think about it... not many jobs pay £70K+ just for the 'expertise' an MBA brings... they want their pound of flesh as well!). An MBA is not a guaranteed easy route to riches. In fact, in some ways an MBA can actually be a hinderance because a lot of people think MBA holders are like the people from 'The Apprentice' and don't have much common sense.

Answering your question though... a 2.2 from Bath won't hold you back, assuming it's in a proper subject. Just say you have a degree in Applied Mathematics or whatever from Bath. People hardly ever ask what degree you have (or even if you have one) once hired, and any jobs that require you to fill out an application form with 1001 details are probably rubbish anyway.

I have a First Class Hons degree from The University of Birmingham in Civ Eng followed by 7 years experience in the Military. I have submitted applications to McKinsey, Bain and BCG but no replies just yet. Can anyone advise on which companies are recruitng at the moment and might be interested in my skills set?
