What would the above correspond to in terms of grade, age and type of company assuming the candidate is UK educated and a career consultant by background? Thanks

Thanks. Would an bonus (assuming normal conditions) in excess of 40% be possible anywhere?

Not really at ACN, they do pay bonus at SM but nowhere near 40% and there is a heavy dependency upon selling work etc...

Is that level of bonus possible in a consulting role within industry? For example, corporate strategy or corporate development in a large wholesale bank or asset manager?

I think when times are good, you would be most likely to get that sort of bonus level within Corporate Strat for a major Investment Bank rather than in a Consultancy.

Internal consulting (corporate) roles tend to pay lower bonuses than external consulting roles as there a much lower part of the work and nominal "revenues" of the practice are contingent on making a sale/competitive bidding.

The variable pay bonus at ACN relates only to your personal performance (and company performance), not to sales.

So to get over 130 in total comp in consulting you would likely have more than 8 years work ex and be about 2 levels down from the most senior grade (eg Partner, Director etc depending which firm).I ask because I know some guys that would get that in a normal year in a bank that have between 5 adn 10 years work ex largely strategic advisory in nature. Problem is that the corp devt type roles are hard come by. Don't expect the bonuses to be too good either for next two years.

To get over 130K in total comp is easy - become a contractor. That target is achievable on a reasonable day rate and work-life balance is good (40 hrs per week). You still have to do your own bus dev to get new contracts but you'd do this anyway at SM grade and here you don't answer to anyone (except yourself and doing a good job for your client)The above is also achievable with only a few years pure consulting experience - the rest is down to effort, ability and common sense (believe me - there are many without the last!)Finally, of-course contracting isn't for everyone for many different reasons (many personal) but just an option for you to achieve the income you are aiming for.

But how do you get these lurcrative contracting contracts? Most people struggle to get a full-time job, let alone find and sustain a continual flow of contracts...

I would expect its easier to freelance as an IT or Ops consultant rather than Strat consultant?

Yes, it's the IT charlatans who have the last laugh on the contracting front as SAP professionals can get up to £1000 a day

The contracts are not as difficult to get as people think. I've found a few just from this website alone, let alone any other jobsite and contacts made in the past. It was a chance advert (on this site!) that got me started after only 1 year in a small consultancy. Never looked back since (and for Curious's benefit - am v.happy with the comp!)
