I am currently an MBBB strategy consultant who is being made redundant (read: completely unrelated to performance, unlike some redundancy programmes). I have really enjoyed my work, but have only been at my company for less than 6 months. Therefore, I am looking to move into a strategy boutique, but wasn't at my employer long enough to work out who we competed against regularly. Can you name some boutiques (or a source to find boutiques) who are well regarded in strategy? Do you know any that are hiring?

How is this trolling? I am asking on Top Consultant's CAREER FORUM for vital information to help me get my career on track. That is probably more appropriate than many of the posts on this site...

Anon66 - I'd take a look at the following niche firms. Can't say for sure that all are recruiting right now, but should give you a good focus to your research.(To all those firms I've overlooked, my apologies. I'm sure this list isn't exhaustive, if you should be on it too please add a forum comment with your firm's name and sector specialism)Arthur D LittleCairneagle AssociatesCandesic (ex-McKinsey team)Commercial Advantage ConsultingCorvenCredoCurzon & Company LLPEdengeneGreenwich ConsultingIMPACT Strategy Consultants (ex-Roland Berger team)Kaiser AssociatesLEK ConsultingMarakonMonitorOC&C Strategy ConsultantsPIMS Associates LtdPRTM Management ConsultantsRoland Berger Strategy Consultants (on a par with McKinsey in Germany but a smaller operation in UK)Simon-Kucher & Partners Strategy & Marketing ConsultantsSpectrum Value PartnersStrategic AnalyticsThe Berkeley PartnershipHope this helps!Tony RestellRevitalising Your Consulting Career --- Securing a Career Move in Consulting in 2009

I meant to say in my previous post - the recruitment firm Freshminds do quite a lot of work in this space, so could be worth looking them up and speaking with them...Tony Restell Revitalising Your Consulting Career --- Securing a Career Move in Consulting in 2009

I'm inclined to think this is trolling too. Tony may have stumped the troll with a serious answer, but I rather think the desired reaction was one of "how could you get a job without knowing the firm's competitors... any firm with those recruiting standards must be in dire straits... you must be a complete retard... if you worked for me I'd have fired you for incompetence... etc."

Competition is not always important. I used to work for a consultancy where almost all our business came from established clients. It was all based on good relationships and past rack record. We never pitched directly against a competitor. Even with new clients I do not recall ever being in competition for work.

@jj - What does that have to do with it? The same statement holds true for most firms. You don't have to be pitching head-to-head with your competitors to read the business press, talk to colleagues, and pick up on which clients and competitors are doing the same kind of work. You can only get away with not knowing who the competition are if you're a member of internally-facing admin staff in a very large bureaucracy. Even then, most secretaries can tell you who the firm's main competitors are just based on what they pick up whilst at work. Even assuming the OP really did stumble into the world of employment somehow, there's no way they could muster such a degree of ignorance unless they spent their time sitting on the bench reading Heat trapped in a well. Dimwittedness of this nature is probably a factor in their allegedly non-performance-related redundancy.

Tony - thanks for your post - it has helped me. I have been with an MBBB firm for 2 years and have no idea who the niche firms are - we always go head to head with other MBBB, but majority of our work is sell on work without competition. To those saying OP is a troll - you clearly think 'inside the box', flaming people at any opportunity. I guess that's the culture at 4th tier consulting firms (like PA, Accenture etc)

Asteroll - I'd have to agree with you. The vast majority of readers I speak with have no idea which firms their consultancy goes up against (outside the obvious contenders), at least not until they've reached the point in their careers where they're actually involved in selling work and therefore come face to face with the niche competition. For those in their early years of consulting, the day to day role of exceeding expectations on client engagements simply doesn't give rise to you bumping up against the niche competitors in your space...On which note, a twitter follower has suggested a few more names to add to the above list: TMNG, Dean & Co, Diamond Tech and ZS Associates.Tony RestellTop-Consultant.com

Spot on: having been at an MBBB for less than 6 months, I have only worked on a few proposals (as well as having gone through the milkround). The names we always hear are those of the other MBBB firms, the Big 4 and certain other large generalist strategy houses like OC&C, Monitor, and LEK, but this list of smaller firms and industry-specific boutiques is really helpful! Thanks!
