Hi, Guys. I need some advice possibly from peeps in similar situation like me or know some one who is... I am interested in a career in Management Consultancy and have an 2:1 MEng in Chemical Engineering (just missed out on a 1st) and just completed a research Masters too but from top 5 unis in my subject area. But my A levels, which I did in 2001 reads 2C's and 1 D. There are good reasons behind this. I have decided after looking at the curriculum to resit for A Level Maths and AS Level further Maths in June at the grand age of 26. I will easily get A's in both and then apply for posts at the back end of the year. say September..What do you think?I actually want to resit them and get them off my mind. Do you think recruiters will frown on this and importantly what do the likes of MBBB or for that matter ADL think of this?

For the purposes of recruitment, only first-time A-level and GCSE results count. Recruiters may frown on your suggested approach, or just find it a little odd, but either way they won't be able to take the new results into account. However, don't let that put you off if you want to re-take the exams for your own peace of mind.

Go get a job - work hard for a couple of years and then try MBBB. Work experience is more valuable in this climate - you never know you may build up your network and then who knows.

Get some relevant work experience and you should be able to get yourself into one of the bigger firms - ACN, Cap etc. Forget MBB; with those A Levels, no matter how well you do in the resits, you'll never ever make it.

I can relate to this. I achieved a 1st class BSc and a PhD. I went to a Deloitte open day and they basically impied that I would be wasting my time applying for a position, as I had BBB (280 UCAS points) at A-level and not ABB (300 UCAS points). It's pathetic.I now work for a consultancy firm. I agree with Mars A Day; get some experience, it's more valuable than what you did when you were 18.

"I went to a Deloitte open day and they basically impied that I would be wasting my time applying for a position, as I had BBB (280 UCAS points) at A-level and not ABB (300 UCAS points)."Given that, on the old points tariff, BBB equated to 300 points and ABB 320, I'd question your credentials. And before you get all defensive about the matter, it's not rocket science. 280 doesn't even divide evenly by 3, so how you associated BBB with 280 UCAS points is slightly worrying. On a serious note, do the resits if it'll make you happy, but other than that you stand to gain nothing in the eyes of prospective employers.

I got the same response form Deloitte. My A levels are BBC. However, I applied anyway to the Big 4, and am now working for McKinsey. You may find the better firms are more enlightened and less beareaucratic when it comes to A Levels, dependignon your degree experience etc

Do consulting firms really care about people's A-level results? Maybe for graduate hires when you're having to sort through squillions of more-or-less identical applicants. But for more senior/experienced hires, I don't think anyone gives a toss. I certainly don't put my A-level results (AABB, if you care) on my CV, and when I'm recruiting, if I see A-level results on someone's application, this normally indicatesto me that they're young and inexperienced. I don't tend to be recruiting recent graduates, though.Bottom line: get some appropriate professional experience and achievements, and nobody will give a monkey's about your A-level results.
