Hi,I am currently an undergraduate student in the UK on my way to finish up next year.I did a quick research on the internet about the best jobs out there and found that the firm McKinsey & Co is apparently the best one to work for.Just wanna make sure that people here have heard of it, and what your thoughts are on joining this firm as an undergraduate?Thank you

Avoid. Over-hyped, under-paid, unchallenging work, that will only last two years before you have to find the money for an MBA, or start from the bottom in a new job.

You must be joking. McK is rated the #1 management consulting firm in the world.Joining as an undergraduate, you work approximately 2 years before you take time off to do and MBA or PhD (payed by McK, including benefits - e.g., research help, visual assistance, salary part of the time etc.).

All the sarcastic comments, while a bit harsh, are partially fair. McKinsey is indeed considered by many to be the top consulting firm in the world. Your question is akin to asking "I am looking into buying a high end car, has anyone heard of a brand called Aston Martin?"You should, by all means, try to join McK. However, take into account that they have a very competitive recruiting, usually hiring from top students at top schools only.

agree with eurocons above. John, if u want a job at mckinsey, you really need to know a hell of a lot about the company. Fortunately, their website is good and offers a good broad level understanding of the company. I can guarantee you the recruiter will ask ' why do you want to work at mckinsey?" have answers ready; your competition, which will be extremenly significant, certainly will.

The reason people are taking the pi$$ on this website is because your question was, in MC terms, also quite frankly taking the pi$$. John although, frankly, you deserve some pretty harsh responses on here, I am more inclined to be forgiving than some of the others. In your defence I don't agree that someone new to looking at consultancy should know who McKinsey is - they are rarely quoted in the press, unlike Big 4 who will give a quote on anything going it seems - and it doesn't follow that just because they are very good you should know all about them. The man/woman on the street would probably never have reason to come into contact with them anymore than they would come into contact with say KKR or Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer - both top of their fields, but hardly as ubiquitous as baked beans.What DOES concern me though is that you take such a laissez faire attitude to your future career - 'I did a quick research on the internet about the best jobs out there' how comprehensive. Take it more seriously, put more effort in, or you won't just be writing off any chance of joining McKinsey, you'll be writing off any chance of joining the world of work. Period.
