Here's a question/scenario that will no doubt cause the cynics in the audience to line up in eager anticipation to make unconstructive responses to, but here goes...As a 2004 graduate of Business Studies with a 2.1, having decided advertising wasn't for me and discovering whilst on a management scheme with a FTSE250 that a desired future lay in management consulting, at the age of 29 what is the advice on how to possibly go about it?Now considered too old for graduate entry, what are the options if any? Currently feels like a no-win situation. Have had interviews at PA and Mouchel but not considered to have quite enough experience for experienced hired positions.Any thoughts?

If you're really that determined, keep on applying and then consider whether it really is a 'no-win' situation once you have a bit more feedback under your belt. It's tough for all of us right now.

Well to state the obvious, PA and Mouchel wanted to see you, so it's not hopeless. As you say you have missed the boat on grad entry so you need to look at how to get your profile on track for exp hire entry - and with the market the way it is, this could be a good time to pick up some useful non MC experience to get you over the line when the big firms start hiring strongly again. Alternatively look at smaller boutique firms, who are sometime able to be more flexible about entry points.Don't lose faith, keep going - you are probably closer than you think.

at 29, how many years experience do you have with advertising / FTSE250 management scheme? How does it relate to the job you're applying for? Is your CV structured with a story in mind, I've been jumping between companies for the past 5 years but my "story" is always consistent & relevant to the interviewer. Doesn't matter where you've come from. "Not enough experience" is code for "you haven't made your case that your experience has any value".

How relevant has your experience been?Wha have you learnt that will make you a good consultant? If your current role isn't developing you in the right way to set you up as a consultant then look at moving jobs as a stepping stone (so main criterion for the next job is development not cash) or doing an MBA.
