Some good news: National intern scheme to help graduates through the recession. Jobless university graduates with the worst employment prospects for a generation will be offered Government-sponsored internships. With the credit crisis causing thousands of job losses in white-collar professions, ministers are engaged in crisis talks with major employers in a bid to find posts for the 400,000 students due to graduate from universities this summer. With unemployment already approaching two million, some experts predict that three million people - one in 10 of the workforce - could be out of work by 2010. Universities say that firms, and in particular investment banks, are cancelling their involvement in the annual “milk round” - when employers visit universities to recruit students for graduate trainee posts - or limiting their participation to the elite institutions. While the internships will not pay a full starting salary, the Skills Secretary says that he hopes graduates will be given up to three months paid work. While no decisions have been taken, ministers will consider whether Government money can be used for the scheme. Pay levels will be set slightly above the combined total that a student would earn in that time from a grant and a loan so that interns do not suffer a cut in income. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/4210088/National-intern-scheme-to-help-graduates-through-the-recession.html

Internships are 3 months, and we always ned more 'staff' in the project office. I see this as a help to UK PLC during the downturn with no need to offer any guarantee, and the minimum wage does not apply. Would save me a lot of time paging through schedules. Also means I can kill the bench that is on these admin tasks right now, and its cheaper than sending it offshore.I think its a good idea.

Solution: A proper two tier (apprenticeship/university) system as for example in France or GermanyIndustry based and approved and government supported and accredited apprenticeships (usually 2-3 years)that let young people become proper professional mechanics, clerks, chefs, hotel staff,IT professionals, etc.A super expensive three year university degree is hardly a viable solution.
