A quick question to all those graduates out there who are looking for positions - how is it going? Are you getting interviews? Are all the companies you are applying to actively recruiting? What is the general mood on campus?

This: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/panic-on-the-campus-as-graduate-jobs-disappear-1334244.htmlPretty much sums it up.

I know many of my friends are struggling to get interviews and due to the intense competition, there always seems to be someone better. I had problems for months as well but just recently got an offer from a boutique consulting firm with a very good package - so it is still possible. Hang in there but network and if you just graduated let your uni help you.

in the FT yesterday they mentioned Grad jobs in the city had fallen by 65% from this time last year..It's a tough market right now, and will remain so until summer I imagine.I have been to a few interviews and have a start date in jan 2010, which is 6 months after graduating.

Even if you do get in, there are no guarantees. My firm recently made redundant several new analysts. The worst part is that it is too late in the recruitment cycle to re-apply.

I think it will be later than the summer. Have a look at all the people being let go and who will be made redundant in the coming months, in addition to the current graduates with no jobs and the coming graduates - this will accumulate to ~3million people in the UK alone. This will take a lot longer to resolve than the summer. :(

Do you know how London is called these days? It's called "Reykjavik on Thames".Britain may well be the next one to follow Iceland into state bankruptcy. So you may have to lower your expectations.

Here are the gross external debt figures as of Q2 2008 as reported to the world bank (http://www.jedh.org/jedh_dbase.html). All figures are in dollars.France 5,492,425,000,000Germany 5,748,837,500,000Italy 2,776,678,750,000UK 11,469,870,000,000USA 13,703,567,000,000At first sight the UK would appear to have a disproportionately high level of external debt relative to the size of its economy compared to the others. Whilst this is mostly a reflection of the nature of the UK economy which is heavily orientated towards finance there is undoubtedly a possible danger in such exposure.

All of these terrifying charts and graphs ignore one fundamental thing:A great deal of UK debt is not an illiquid new motorway or money down the pan but equity in huge financial institutions. I anticipate the value of these equity positions to rise and be liquidated within the next 5-10 years.Perhaps our debt will still be proportionatly high, but not so high as these Daily Mail articles suggest.

These guys are hiring, but only in North America and Japan. Look for any consultancy that is into health care, government or utilities, because they are still seeing work.A particular cost-cutting focus is good, as this end of consultancy usually experiences much better revenues in a downturn.http://www.trindent.com
