I've worked in Back office / middle office for 2 years since graduating in jun 2005 - I want to work in mang cons - if i did a full time MSc in a different field (engineering / science), would that help me to get into mang cons ? if not then how else ?

You'd probably just appear directionless. Better to do a Masters in Management. Or try applying directly to a niche FS consultancy (if you can find one that's hiring).

Thanks, I agree. but my thinking was that as FS consultancy seems to be drying up, then by doin a MSc outside of finance - I show other skills/knowledge set apart from FS! wouldn't a MSc in Management be too focused - are they actually appreciated ? (dont they look like a quick fix MBA ?)

Management is the best-match subject for consulting. Coming from a finance background, business and management skills are the biggest gap on your CV. Your undergraduate degree provides sufficient evidence of quantitative ability - an MSc in science or engineering would simply give the impression that you wanted to get out of finance, but weren't sufficiently committed to consulting to focus on it at that stage. Although consultancies hire non-business undergraduates, since you have some work experience already, you could be seen as dawdling. The Masters in Management is likely to be your best bet as it will equip you with core business and management knowledge without expecting you to bring hands-on management experience. There are a number of these courses available for non-business undergraduates, e.g. at LSE and Cass.

Thanks Bill, given the markets, would it be best to keep my current job for another 2 years and take on MSc in management part time ? I presume at this stage in my transition from Finance to MC that an MBA would be too costly/risky ?

Agree. Competition for business-school places is high too at the moment, so with only two years experience, it would be difficult to get into a good MBA programme.

It depends

Which type of firm are you looking to work for when joining MC?If you have your heart set on MBBB-type, an MBA from a good school is the best way to go.If you are looking at Big-4 or similar level firms, a couple more years work experience plus an MSc will position you well for experienced hires.

Only 2 yrs work experience, esp. in product control isn't enough to get into a good MBA though

Looking for something in the middle of MBBB & big4 full service firms. Not 100%, but thinking I want to enter into advisory/strategy roles - given this - is MSc still worthwhile ? (and definitely not the CFA ?)

Absolutely not CFA - it'll take you in the wrong direction
