Anyone else have the long term career goal of being an entrepreneur?I am very keen to leave consulting and do this. I have no academic background in business so contemplating MBA but feel it would be a lot of expense and the money could be put to better use growing a business. Thoughts?

Don't waste the money on an MBA - if you need the business knowledge, read books! Nothing compares to practical experience anyway.

What (broadly) is your business idea and what are your capabilities (I presume these are primarily technical in nature) to contribute towards its realisation?

No academic background in business? Isn't a career in consulting about the most academic (and possibly least practical?) business background in existence?I constantly think about doing my own thing - I'm pretty certain I could easily generate my salary off my own back.

Well I'm a supply chain consultant so I've learned about that side of business but that's only one of a number of different aspects of running your own business.

Guys please don't bash academics. I think MBA would be very valuable particularly from a top-tier organization. You learn the business theories, meet a whole bunch of smart classmates, develop a strong network etc. All of that can help you become a successful entrepreneur. Sure you don't need a top-tier education to be successful, but it's a tool that can help you get where you want to be. I don't know if this statistic exists but I think this may very well be true - that the % of successful entrepreneurs with relevant degrees is greater than the % of successful entrepreneurs without degrees.

I can see where you're coming from but if you have about 50k in the bank pre-mba and are considering startng your own business it's a far less risky proposition than doing it post-mba when you'll probably have about 50k of debt!

Yep, I left consulting 6 months ago to start my own business (not consulting related!). Already projecting to make more in the next 6 months than I made in a year of consulting – and that was in a manager role. It’s not hard so long as you're bright and driven. I already had my masters but don't think that has anything to do with my success so I wouldn't recommend using that as an excuse not to start now. Good luck - I can assure you it’s much more fun and prosperous on the other side!!
