Hi, I am considering a move to join a big4 or strat house (mercer oliver, ...) in the Quantitative and Risk Management consulting space. I have a MBA from a top 3 european school, a master in quantitative finance from a very good university and a PRM certification (Professional risk management). I have 10 years work experience with 8 years in investment banking doing various quantitative risk role and 2 years in a big 4 as a manager in the risk practice (2 years ago). What grade can I expect to be hired (Director? Sr Manager)? My sales experience is short, though my expertise and ability to write leadeship papers is strong... can I expect to get anywhere near a Director position without sales figures? What sort of salaries can be expected? Thanks for any feedback.

Sounds like associate material to me - a good number cruncher and document writer, maybe leading the occasional project and contributing to the odd proposal, but not fully there re: business development yet?

Maybe consultant grade given that he has that MBA.

thanks for the feedback... even if I don't fit with the grade you put me in. I led major projects in trading and risk transformation 2 or 3 years ago, managing up to 30 people in consulting engagement. My area of expertise is quantitative risk management (Director level in I banking) and I know very few consulting houses are able to attract and keep talents in that space. Would very much appreciate any serious feedback from anyone with exposure to the quantitative risk market and advisory space...

What's a "top 3 European school"?Most top consulting firms only recruit at LBS and INSEAD in Europe. Can your careers service help you with this??I work at a "strategy consulting" firm. We virtually never hire people above consultant (post-MBA) level, as those coming from industry or elsewhere do not have the requisite consulting skills - and by that I mean a knowledge of the in-house process and way of doing things, and a ridiculously anal level of fussiness and attention to detail.Which, unfortunately, is a very big deal. It may mean that you have to come in at consultant level and are then earmarked for rapid promotion.

In summary - unless you've been fired as director in IB, stay!

My MBA is from IMD and all top consulting firms recruit there... and the job offers from MBBB are as high as at Insead (in term of ratio job offer to the number of graduate). I did the MBA more than 4 years ago.Coming back to my grade, I believe there is an expert path in some strat houses, for expert type people from industry. is that still the case?Beside strat house, big4 advisory firms might be a very good alternative.... any advice on how to approach these guys at the right level?

Out of interest, which collapsing (collapsed) IB are you from?I hope you weren't too involved in their risk-assessments, it may not be a great selling point...

Welcome to consulting. Basically you can only get so far being a doer and not a seller. You're looking at Senior/ Principal consultant, certainly not MP as you need a selling network for that. Either swallow your pride or stay where you are.
