A bit of background, im a first year student moving into my second year at uni after the summer.I wanted to ask if any of you could reccomend any qualifications i can go about working towards, perhaps during this summer, which would help in my quest to ultimately get a job in consultancy. I was considering doing an IMC (investment management certificate), but am not totally sure this is the most relevant course of action to take. Thanks in advance,Tom

T o'H,There are other things that you can do as a higher priority:1) Get a 1st or 2:1. Do NOT get a 2:2 or 3rd as it will make it much harder to start a career in consulting. (Someone is sure to write a reply stating that he has a 3rd in agricultutal studies from Bognor Regis Poly and now works for McKinsey, but he will very much be in the minority.)2) Get some relevant work experience. Summer internships go a long way. If you can't get one with a consultancy or IB, then go for a big four accountancy, then anything else.3) Join a couple of clubs at University and take on the captain, secretary or treasurer's role. If you've got a business, economics or consulting club, join that too.4) Be very sure that you want to work in consulting. Then worry about other things such as qualifications.EC

As an alternative suggestion, it's not too late to get into a proper profession.

You're going about it in exactly the right way, at the right time.Think about relevant work experience, the Shell STEP programme and some good holidays. Also think about typical interview questions - how can you demonstrate leadership, team work etc.good luck

EC's 4th bullet is spot on, answer the question 'what do you want to do', properly, and everything else flows from there. Good luck!
