What % payrises have people had so far this year or are expecting? I've heard rumours of 3% or less in some places.

7% but that included a step progression within the career gradeNo idea what it would have been independent of the progression - probably around 3% too

7% isn't really that great is it? Taking into account general inflation that's around a 4% increase in real terms. Then add on 40% tax onto that, and you'll be seeing a 2.4% increase in your net income.

I'll give you a clue as to what I got. It's a very tall, thin single digit number number, precisely one unit bigger than a big fat round number.

well that's atleast 100 basis points better than the round fat number that seems to be lurking around the corner for some...

Pay rises in BOP in April were well down on last year, as were bonuses. Our partner made a big announcement recently that all salaries would be reviewed in the April 2008 payround - what he meant to say was reviewed downwards...

Taxman, that sounds really unreasonable... unless you're paid loads already, surely you're in a really strong position to negotiate your pay upwards? On a separate note, why is it that some firms only ever offer to pay long-standing staff what they're worth once they've already handed in their notice?

Small company, partners went home with a small fortune, staff have been given the usual excuses about how tough business is lately despite working their arses off and bringing in more than enough work, 1% pay rise. I might as well go and become a truck driver at this rate.

So I guess not all consultancies are feeling the credit crunch pinch and hence it may be worth considering a move.

I got 15% despite spending 8 weeks on the bench in the last year. It's about who you know, and shagging your boss (she just loves my length)

Low paid and hard work. What kind of industry jobs would you recommend for your run of the mill, mostly IT-focused consultant?

IT is a second class career, once it was a good career now its just a job like a callcentre worker. The UK graduates are tailing off, as we seen previously with Engineering and Science. My advice is get out of IT , or move to elbonia or somewhere you can live for the penny/dime jobs that are now the core of IT.

Hi Anon - I'm interested in knowing what your back ground was and how you managed to find your much better paid job. Is it common to get such pay in industry, and was there any luck or networking involved?

I got my current role via a normal application process, however I had made the most of my time in consulting with relevant projects, for clients in the same/similar industries, at a strategic level.I also reject a number of roles because they didn't offer me the career potential I wanted.Via hard work (a lot harder than consulting), maximising opportunites and taking the lead I have secured the pay rises and bonuses. The key when stepping out of consulting is to find a role that enables you to do this.
