Since many firms are trying to offshoring as much of their work as possible I was wondering what jobs within IT would be offshored the most and which jobs would be safe in the UK.

anything that involves new or novel technology, that is not mature enough to off-shore, client facing roles, roles at the interface between business and IT, IT governance, project mgmt, sales, security, there should be plenty of these types of roles on shore

You say that but my company is currently growing people offshore to take up those roles that sit between the business and IT for example. I honestly don't think much will be safe except those roles where you need Security Clearance to get on to client site.

Well a certain big blue company is only giving payrises to Indian staff in the hope that its UK and USA staff tootle off without requiring a package.And as the MC's say IT is not a job that requires any scruples its a function like turd polishing.

Safe jobs are those which can't be done remotely - plumbers, hairdressers, tree surgeons, cabling technicians.IT jobs, by their nature, can be done remotely.

Billy Bob,IT jobs that wont be outsourced involve client facing roles predominantly. Activities such as business analysis ( not systems analysis), pre sales, account mgt, client IT strategy, etc cannot be easily outsourced. Note that these skills are also 'higher valued' i.e. they usually bring in the highest billing rates, and usually will be most prized my top mgt in your company than , say, design/devt skills.Also note that these jobs require a focus on the 'soft skills'- the communication, presentation, creative thinking, coordination skills, etc and not strictly technical skills ( although you should have a foundation, not necessarilly mastery of technology , depending on role specifics).

Having worked in IT for almost twenty years I would agree with the majority of the comments in this thread. The requirment for Project Managers, IT Managers and IT Directors is growing while the demand for entry level staff disappearing. It will be interesting to see what happens in ten years time with no new “blood” coming through. That being said, I am already pretty well progressed on the career ladder so it doesn’t pose me a problem.
