I'm thinking of applying to some of the medium to large consulting firms in Toronto Canada. However, I do not know, in general, that there will be a lot of travelling. I would like to minimize my travel due to family reasons, so I do not know if a consulting career would be ideal for me. Thoughts opinions? Thanks!

There are bound to be exceptions, but simply put, if you don't want to travel, don't go into consulting...

When i say travel, i mean working 3-6 months in a different city/country. Travel a few days a month is okay to meet clients. Is this reasonable or do consultants at the associate level and higher require to be put in a different country for more than a month at a time?

There are very few consulting gigs where you can spend a "few days a month" on the road. The nature of your travel may vary, but odds are that you will be on the road.By way of example, this week I will work in four cities in three countries. On my previous project, I spent week after week travelling back and forth to the same client site, with occasional side trips to visit satellite sites.I usually expect Friday night and Saturday night in my own bed; anything more than that and I am grateful. Some firms run 5-4-3 schemes (including mine, I think), but in practice I haven't seen a lot of people working 5-4-3. Most people are on-site at the client almost full-time.

you will be lucky to be able to spend at best Thurs, Fri and the weekends in your own bed.some roles I have worked in have turned out local so I was able to spend every night at home, others are as above at least...expect as a new incomer to be sent wherever is needed, after a while you may fall lucky and people will look at your location and costs of sending you onto a project i.e. minimising expenses
