Folks, I have a tough decision to make....I have a proposal from Deloitte....The recruitment programme just said it was for consulting but in my final round I got to know I was being recruited for IT consulting - as I am from Computer Engineering - and not the Strategy&Operations I really want.My question is....without a solid network (I am just about to graduate), should I take the offer to get a foot in the "Consulting World" - even if I will not like my job - will or should I snub them to follow my strategy "dream"?

I wouldn't take the offer if i were you... you will be labeled as an IT techie and ruin your chances at placement at other management business consulting firms

have to agree with the above if you want to do strategy do strategy don't go off and do IT consulting. If you wanted a ham sandwich, would you order a roast veg one instead?

Think long and hard about this - IT consultancies like Deloitte (and especially ACN SI&T) are full of ex business grads who fancied a shot at strategy consulting and have zero interest in IT of any kind but who were offered the tech consulting job by their company and find themselves pushing buttons on some ERP package or doing stuff like testing and wondering where it all went wrong. Don’t get me wrong, if that kind of thing appeals to you then go for it but go into it with your eyes open and remember that making the jump out of the tech side is apparently both rare and very hard to achieve. The other problem is that all the aforementioned ex business grads are also thinking the same thing as you will be.

Regarding your strategy "dream", did you apply to any strategy consultancies this year? That would be an important benchmark to guide your decision - if you applied and were unsuccessful, then you might reasonably assume you should take whatever decent job you can for the time being. If you simply missed the deadlines then you might want to consider going travelling or doing something to pass the time before applying to strategy in three or four months time.

I agree with the above posts...One question, you mentioned Strategy/Operations.....I am not that experienced but surely these two areas are quite different - Strat or Ops??My exp for what its worth...graduated from Engineering...2 years in industry....good intro to business with sales, supply chain, marketing etc. Discovered consulting on the job - applied for a global 'full service' firm got it and took the job...only to be duped into doing testing, coding etc!!! Don't be duped buddy....I have spent the last 2 years sidestepping and fighting for non-IT based consulting roles...v stressful to do this and maintain utilisation but i did NOT want to do work which could be offshored! Now I can angle the work I fought to get as 'Ops consulting' - cost analysis, process improvement etc - but this is still not relevent for Deloitte Strategy....still difficult to make the jump, despite Master in Eng and 4 A's @ A level with maths adv maths and kick ass perf in my job!!! Life can be balls. get it rightSo.....be patient and don't make my mistake which is be in a mad rush simply to 'get in' 'consulting'. Pitch yourself accurately even if it takes another 6 months. This is what i am taking time to do now, 4 years later!Sep note...what do you all think I should do???....> Move into an Ops consulting role with a new firm which I can do easily - Is Ops consulting regarded as a better place to be than IT consulting?> Apply for strategy consulting at big 4 - CDD work, deal based work etc- NOT MBBB. I have the skills and academics for this-- will just take another 6 months to wait for junior level role (not grad) to become avalable again. ll recently filled. but that == more time treading water in S&IT.Any advise or insults (on this board there are always a few!!) are welcome.

i agree with everyone else here and suggest you don't take itand with regards to ops vs IT... ops is definitly better then IT but in the grand scheme of things ops is not that great (its only better then IT because IT is that bad)

SchmoDa's comment (sadly) sums up the experience of about 70% of graduate joiners at accenture. At their careers presentations they sell the whole thing as if you'll be doing proper 'consulting' work, and conveniently omit the fact that most people spend their first 2 years testing.IT consulting is not, and never will be a 'way in' to strategy consulting

I agree you shouldn't jump at an IT consultancy role. However, true Strategy consultancy comes from a blend of experience - from business operations, IT and a solid academic/education background. Just because you just left Uni you think you can do strategy! I am afraid to pop your bubble - but if you don't do the leg work and prove yourself, you will have little credibility with your clients. So what if you do 1 or two years of techy work?!? I have over 20 years experience of both operations, management, leadership, coaching and various consultancy experiece. Do the time, do a great job - it will come. Don't be impatient.
