Hey all,I am an analyst with Accenture and have been working with the company for close to a year now in their technology group. I have spent my entire time here doing tedious testing work and hate it and it doesn't seem like this is going to change any time soon as they want me to take on another testing project that is for half a year.Should I leave now?If so what are my exit options?

Say no! Don't be mislead into thinking that you are not allowed to say no, yes there will be people that will pipe up and say - you are an analyst just do as your told! Frankly I have been exactly where you are, I totally refused to do testing, but don't in anyway feel like my career has suffered for it. If you dislike more than your last role, then yeah I would consider leaving, but if not, stand your ground! If you don't do it now, your internal CV will forever look like Tester!

A lot of people leave Accenture and all the other Big-4 firms (both consulting and accounting) after their first few months to a year. They often switch to grad schemes in completely different industries. Obviously, you have to explain the change but there's no great shame in saying that you realised you'd made the wrong choice, and reevaluated your options. People understand that the marketing power of the big recruiter brands sometimes sucks people in (although you probably shouldn't say it like that in an interview). The question is, can you see a route, or can you find someone to advise you on finding a route within Accenture to get to some work you'd enjoy? If you're able to articulate the work you're interested in then feel free to throw up a question on this forum about how you can get from testing to that field. You'll probably find that when you have a clear path to get where you want to go, another six months of testing won't be as hard to bear. I would confidently guess that there's no way to get out of testing immediately without seriously damaging your reputation for reliability and hence your future prospects within the firm.If you can't find a path within Accenture then certainly look elsewhere. It will depend on where your preferences lie what your plan of action should be, as the timings for e.g. taking a Masters, vs. starting your own business, vs. applying to banking are very different.

I forgot to add one thing, which is perhaps obvious. Your exit options should be heavily influenced by finding something better, rather than just escaping your present situation. Your "pull" factors for the change should ideally be stronger than your "push" factors. This is for two reasons: firstly, it will come across in your interviews for other jobs; secondly, it reduces your chances of ending up somewhere else where you're just as unhappy.

I agree with $0.02. You don't have to accept the first project that offers to you, particularly if you haven't been on the bench long. Aggressively search for and reply to roles that you are interested in, and try to get your network and your support to help get you in. Even if you don't know the project lead on a role you want, your CC just might, and could talk to them for you. If you don't like testing, you'll have to stop taking testing roles, or as they say, that's all anyone will ever want you for.
