Using Contacts

Can I get in?
10.01.8 00:00

I have a family contact at top tier consultancy. They are a senior director (I think) and friends with my father. I don't have the experience or grades to get through 'the system' through the front door. Will this person be able to get me an interview? Shall I apply now, and if/when I get rejected then go to this person for advice, or let them know before I apply?

A resisting nespot

I'm in a similar position, with very well connected relatives being very willing to help me get into McK or wherever I want. Reasons I'm against the idea:- You could never take pride in getting in yourself- If others at work found out "Little Jimmy only got in because of Uncle Big", I imagine that could make life difficult- It's just not right. That's just my view though, I've had plenty of people disagree with me, and I'd be interested to know what others think.

You should certainly use your contacts for advice. This includes discussing your career objectives, understanding the job and firm better; and identifying areas within the firm that would be suitable for you. You could also get feedback from him on whether your grades would be a show stopper and best way of presenting this at interview. It is also acceptable to use your contacts as a point of introduction. If your grades are way off then this would be pointless as you will just get rejected at first interview.Resisting nespot - I think you should rethink this. The consulting "game" is won by personal relationships and networking. If you want to play then that is what you must do in your job search and thereafter. If you do not want to play then that is OK too but you will not win business.......also a personal introduction may smooth the path but getting the job will be down to your performance at interview so you can still keep your pride and perhaps be proud that you have already started leveraging your network.

If I were you, I would use my contacts to get me a job. It is the same thing as doing what the brown nosers, networkers and bed hoppers do.<br>You are lucky to have such contacts. Just use them.

I agree that contacts are great for information, advice, and if necessary an introduction. Which goes for work in general as well as job-hunting. In this case however I&apos;ve gotten through to at least the 1st round for firms I&apos;m interested in on my own.But I&apos;m not keen on interfering with the application process for reasons given above. Am I really the only one who doesn&apos;t want to put themselves in the same category as &apos;bed-hoppers&apos;?

Applaude your sense of integrity, but the consulting profession is all about relationships and networks. You would think that relationships are important in landing a job. Once through the door, its even more pivotal for things like case staffing, promotions and office transfer opportunities. In this job, you need to strike a compromise between wisdom and integrity.
