Guys can I ask if anyone has an opinion on, or knows much about BT's Consultancy divison? I've heard some good things about their recent and planned growth in the consultancy area but equally worried about a possible job there turning into an IT/Communications product sales job! Thanks,Michael

Don't do it. Seriously, don't do it. Unless they offer you 2.5x your current salary. I haven't been here long, but I've long since started applying for other jobs.

Really that bad?! Could you tell me more? Are you based in Hampshire? That's where I've got to head for my interview... I'm hoping the role will be London based though.

Clarify...

Mikmo...Is this an experienced position with BT you are going for? Or is this a graduate position? The reason I ask is because to get the most out of this forum you are always best clarifying exactly what position it is you are interviewing for and then giving us a rough idea of what you want to go into later on (or go into now) for your career……then we can give you a more detailed perspective from our experience of how this potential position would help/hinder your longer-term career aspirations :)Good luck.

...and also including what you are doing now (graduated? work experience? industry experience?) and including other options you may have as well as this position is always good...so advice can be given relative to your options...Hope that helps......in a mood to be helpful today since it is coming up to christmas and I see that you seem to be a first time poster on this forum :)

I appreciate your advice. I was wary of droning on in my original post.I just graduated and I am currently a postgrad doing CAP1 ACCA exams, sponsored by, and joining, PWC Ireland in September 08. I want to work in Consultancy, the position with PWC is ABAS (Assurance & Business Advisory). From what I've heard, it should really just be called Assurance. I do not want to spend the formative years of my career in assurance. I have enquired about moving to PWC Strategy but they have been less than helpful and continue to put a firm answer off.

BTGS in particular, but anyone who knows anything about BT Global Services. Have anything to add? PWC Assurance isn't taking me where I want to go but if BT won't either I'll persevere here and look for a move to PWC strategy.

BT GS is a vast organisation and the part you are talking about is their Professional Services organisation formerly known as GPS.At a high level their strategy is about growing their PS footprint so that BT can engage on more business related issues however, be advised, they continue to lead with product rather than services as that's what they do best and consulting at BT is based primarily upon one of two areas; supporting internal account development teams engage with their sectors, or, supporting current deals such as the NHS spien contract.Question is what do you want to do????If you want to external clients on a daily basis and want to work with top consultants on pure strategy/process/business transformation work it is not the place to go!!If you are interested in having a good start to consulting in a culture which is less aggressive than say ACN then maybe it's worth a look.To be fair, I moved on from BT not because I didn't like the work content. I moved on because their culture and work style is not really a PS company. They do tend to isolate consultants and drive home working as a preference so if you want lots of daily camaraderie and travel I think you should think twice.Decide what you want from a PS company and how it will support your career growth. The money will come as a by product of this.

Thanks for your reply ME2. Ultimately I would like to be doing strategy / business transformation with external clients but I may not be able to get in a firm like that this year. If my options are PWC Assurance & Advisory, with ACCA qualifications, or BTGS Professional Services which do you feel would best equip me for a later career move into a more strategy orientated firm?Does BTGS have enough cache to allow a move to a stronger consultancy in a few years?

Difficult one...I think you may get exposure to better clients in the long term with PwC unless you're really into Public Sector and PwC will probably be a better name on the CV.My suggestion is go and get an interview with both and spell out your career aspiration as boldly as possible then make your decision based upon that if work content is the driving force behind your decision. If you inadvertantly pick the wrong firm it will have been because you've been mislead. The worst that will happen is you may end up spending a year with a company and gaining some experience even if it's in the wrong field. You should be able to get a good feel for the company from a telephone interview and if it will meet your career aspirations.

Well I've got the offer with PWC already and been down for a few things with them... pretty sure it's not what I want! I'll take your advice and see what I can find out from BT, final round is two day assessment center in January. If anyone else has any experience with BT Global Service, or for that matter ABAS at PWC please do share. Any information helps when making what is ultimately a very difficult and very important choice! Merry Christmas to all!
