#0 McKinsey application question...

Hi I'm a student currently in the Milkround application process. Have interviews with Accenture (Strategy), Deloitte (Operations) and BP (Commercial) but have just recieved a rejection letter from McKinsey.I have had harsh rejection letters from law firms a few years ago that put me off applying to the same firm again but this McKinsey letter seems to me to be encouraging a re-application at a later date. My academic background is ok with a 2.1 in Law and a MSc in International Business with AAB at A Level. Am I right in thinking this or am I simply deluded? The email went as follows:We were impressed by your achievements; however, based on our screening criteria for potential consultants, we do not believe that you currently match our requirements in some areas. You may find it helpful to refer to our website www.mckinsey.co.uk - applying to McKinsey - as this will provide a more detailed breakdown of the criteria we look for when selecting candidates for interview.Your opinions on this matter would be greatly appreciated.ThanksSteve

Come on! It is the same generic email sent to all applicants not invited to an interview. Got the exact same last year! It's good for their image not to be too harsh. Besides, if you have almost the calibre needed to even consider applying to McKinsey, there is a possibility that you might gain skills and they might want you.... hence the nice go-fry-an-egg email.Good luck for the rest of your applications.

Fair enough.I knew it was generic but reason I ask though is because I know somebody who applied before and recieved what was practically a PFO (Please F*** Off) rejection. Maybe he didn't even meet the academic requirements.Good luck for others MA Student and thanks Lost Grad.

Two of my buddies were transferred to McKinsey through their networks. I suggest you get over it and try with other firms. There are several good firms, where you get the chance to do the same type of work...Good luck!

Just for the record what are the typical stats needed for having a decent chance at the Mck application. Are Oxford PPE 1st Hons and Harvard MSc Finance mandatory or will something more meagre also suffice?

haha no Newb, from what I hear in comparison to others McKinsey is more relaxed. I asked them this, well along those lines at a presentation here at Uni and they simply said "why would we be here if that was the case". However, they then went on to say that the reason this happens to occur is due to the sheer volume of applications from Oxbridge etc.Steve, I also know someone who received the PFO as you described it quite early on in the process and in my opinion he was far better qualified than me so I am not sure of the relevance.

Just remember folks, when/if you finally get the opportunity to turn a job or an interview down, do not miss the opportunity to write to the company "despite the quality of your organisation, unfortunately the competition for my skills has been particularly intense this year and I have a found a company more suited to my professional developmental needs"

Or how about just hitting back by rejecting their rejection; "Despite the validity of your reasoning and the sheer volume of rejections I have received. I regret to inform you that I refuse to accept your rejection. Please do not hesistate to contact me on for any feedback you may want on my refusal, I hope to see you in the induction session next week."
