Dear array of management consultants,I am not a management consultant but work by @rse off on a daily basis. Others in my company seem to get away with doing absolutely nothing. I have also noticed that some people seem to reach the upper tiers of the organisation, make horrendous mistakes, cost the company millions and subsequently end up keeping their titles, earning the same salaries and taking on virutally no responsibility at all. The number of times I have seen someone get "promoted" out of a role simply to get them away from a particular department. So my question to you all. How do I become "that" guy? How do I become the person who gets paid a VP salary for doing absolutely nothing?

Good question indeedin my fairly lengthy experience i have discovered that people do get caught out sooner or later - its best to grin and bear it - there will always be people in organisations who will rise to the top by virute of the hot air they expel - there will be others who rise to the top by virute of hard work - by identifying what type of organisation you are in and what type of people get rewarded should give you some indication of where you will end up! Hard work I know, diffidult to take i agree, but in the long term experience has taught me that these people have self perservation ingrained in them and others seem to recognise and like it!

Get yourself slighty famous. Identify fast rising individuals, ingratiate yourself with them and they will usually create opportunity for their magic circle as they rise through the ranks. Also get visibility - it's no good working hard if no one sees you doing it, so make sure you find yourself a mentor, someone senior enough, and central enough to have a say in promotions. And don't be shy about talking about what you are doing/achieving for the firm - in fact you should be talking about this all the time you are in face time with decision makers in your organisation. Make yourself indispensible to the rising stars. Bingo.

with this in mind, I would really like to see consulting pay more performance based. Some of the guys and girls i work with are frankly rubbish and lazy where some are great and really get things done. Would be nice if there were more onuses to encourage hard work!
