I was wondering if any consultants/recruiters out there could give me some information.I'm a non-EU citizen (31 years old) working in a wholesale food supply and distribution services company in London with a 5 year work permit for the same company since 1 year.As for my educational and professional background;-MBA degree from a FT & USNews listed university in Boston with a specialization certificate in Marketing-Bachelor of Science in computer engineering-1 year (present) as a business development manager (London - FMCG)-2 years as a consultant in the energy industry working with Japanese, Korean, German/American MNCs (non-EU country)-6 months as a marketing consultant (USA, contract)-8 months as a technical specialist/IT security - Sales in a high-tech German MNC (non-EU country)(left for MBA)-1 year as a Public Relations and Presentation Officer in the military working with Reuters, AP and others-6 months as a Graduate Intern - System Design/Project Realization in a big German car manufacturer (Germany)-4 months as a Java programmer in a German Research Institute (Germany, part-time)I did my MBA with a full scholarship and worked as a Research Assistant (Financial analysis) for the Finance & Insurance Group. So I'm also quite familiar with Standard & Poor’s Research Insight and CRSP. I'm also fluent in German.I applied before to McKinsey in London, but sadly got a rejection for another position, which I didn't apply (informing them didn't really help)... So, can anybody tell me honestly what my chances are for getting a consultancy job in London (either in big or small companies) and if there are certain things I should do?Any information and help would be really very much appreciated, because I keep hearing from other people that one would need to have personal contacts in the industry to get a consultancy job in my position.

That has to be amongest the worst career histories I have ever seen. Your CV would be straight in the bin if it came to me.I would suggest seeing this job through for at least 3 years, show some commitment, then start looking around

I am a Head-Hunter and have posted under the name Realist. PLease note that the post above was not written by me. It is true that stability is good but you have a credible MBA and potentially some useful experience. With the right support, you should be marketable

- to Realist (the first one),My short work-experiences (part-time & graduate internship) are the ones I did right after getting my degree. The one year Public Relations Officer post was for my military service - so I had to do it and I gained a lot of skills from that position.The only position that I had to cut short was my position at the German MNC where I worked for 8 months, because I had to choose between the possibility of my department closing down and doing an MBA in a very good American university. So I chose MBA for my future and learned later that my department was combined with another one and most people except the managers were made redundant.As for the rest I have nothing, which I can’t explain to a future employer. I also would have liked to enter one company and stay there but as most experienced professionals know, sometimes it is not possible or preferable depending on the conditions.- to Realist (the second one)Thanks for your comment. You would like to enter one company and stay there. Why don't you then? You are with a company that has obtained you a 5 year work permit and you are looking to leave after a year. All reads very odd to meWhat do you want from your career? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? why consulting?

Real realist,apologies for stealing your name. Why do you value an MBA so highly? They are not something magical, some sort of fix for lack of experience and limited ability. They are pretty straight forward to get and should not be valued anywhere near as highly as good career progression on a CV.Looking at OMB. he has been working for 6 years. Has had 7 jobs and not a jot of management experience. Absolutely no career progression. What does he truly have to offer?

It is impossible to judge this individual's true credentials through this mechanism. He/She has probably already divulged more info that he/she should have done. Boston MBA is OK and actually a very good course. Not all the strat consultancies would rate it though. It is wrong to slate the person's experience. It looks like a few contracts/internships have been followed up by something a little more solid. It seems that Realist is one of these disgruntled types without an MBA who is seeing people with MBA + real experience enter his/her company at a good level. This is just how it is, I am afraid. It is not a question of debating whether this is right or wrong. It is just the way it is.
