Unan,In most cases, it is all about prestige. In consulting, there is a perception that working as a Strategist is more prestigious than other forms of consulting as this is what the high-paying firms (MBBB) do as their core business.Strategist tend to deal with top-level issues hence are mainly communicating with very senior people by the time they reach mid career. Other forms of consultants tend to deal with middle managers mostly and very few senior people by the time they reach mid career.I am a strategist, so I feel I am entitled to tell you that I don't think because one works in strategy they are necessarily more intelligent than other consultants despite being paid more on average. I think the reason for the higher play is about demand and supply. Strategy requires a kind of skill (seeing the big picture) that is more rare in the wider public than skills that other consultants use. It does not mean strategist are better or more intelligent, they have a natural skill that is just more rare hence get a premium for their rare natural skills as the supply pool is low. A lot of strategist will fail in other forms of consulting as they cannot deal well with detail.Don't follow the bandwagon stupidly or because of money. Go for the type of consulting that is more aligned to you natural skills.
