Hello,Being an undergraduate intern at one of the MBB firms, I am wondering in what office to start my career.Since Dubai interests me, I would like to know your experience regarding:1. Dubai pay: I will get a local contract (no expat), so basically I'd like to know the salary range I can expect as an entry level undergraduate.2. Dubai expenses: How bad is the real estate market? Minimum rental and property prices? (I am willing to live very frugally, so really looking for entry prices.)3. Dubai lifestyle: Distorted female/male ratio due to male expats? Longer than MBB average working hours? (I consider 60h/week average.)4. MBC cases: Are multibusiness companies (as you can find in Dubai) a good type of clients to work for? I am looking for clients that tend to execute what we propose (e.g. energy) instead of having company politics taking over (e.g. commercial banks). Also looking for travel opportunities. Thanks for your time and sharing. Also, pleae feel free to suggest other great locations.

Bloody hell, where to start? I suggest you do some more digging as you seem sold on Dubai but have no idea what Dubai is about! Short and long of it is that Dubai is essentially a Western city in the desert. It has everything you'd expect if you live in Europe or the US, with the added bonus of year-round sun and beaches. The same cannot be said of the rest of the Middle East (even Abu Dhabi an hour's drive away is much more reserved) and given you'll be travelling a lot in consulting in the region you better be comfortable with the fact that as great as Dubai is, you'll spend a lot of time in very crappy places (even my old days on scabby industrial estates doing consulting don't compare). That said, I've loved the diversity of it, many other expats haven't. Pay is good, there's no tax so you're much better off. Real estate is expensive (about £15k yearly rent for a 1 bed place) but is offset by your tax and lifestyle benefits. If you look at the stats on the UAE you'll see the male/ female ratio is 70/30, however this is hugely distorted by the low paid workers who live here. Expat population is about 55/45 I'd say in my experience, though many of the ladies come attached. As for a place to start your career, it's good but I'd recommend a few years hard graft in a good European office before coming, you'll have many more options and a much bigger pay packet.

Thanks for your answer.Yes I am quite sold to Dubai without really knowing what it will be exactly, but it seems fun. On staying for a few years in Europe, I don't know, I have seen it over here and want to see the world before I settle. On the rental prices, the purchase prices for small appartments are quite ok i think. It seems to me that real estate has a high yield over there.

I am aware of the foreclosure wave in the USA and yes, RE is hot about everywhere else. But thanks to the strong euro I found a 450 square feet studio for 39K. Sorry, even on a D location, that is low for a big city. Smaller studios are going for more in my college town.

A "D" location in Dubai means no air conditioning and a 2 hour commute EACH WAY due to gridlocked traffic at hot spots. It's not apples with apples. You should also be aware the mortgage market is very different to UK/ Europe, expect big deposits, lower repayment terms (10 years not uncommon) and higher interest rates (9-10%). Add to that the quality of many flats means they'll not be here in 10 years and you maybe get to understanding some of the risk in purchasing...
