I am 25. graduated from a good uni, went into a good consulting firm, then a bank etc etc. I have 2 years of work experience, i earn average salary (45k) - cant complain. But I have NO IDEA what i want to do in life. Absolutely none. I sort of 'figure' to hang around in these environments ( and to be honest, one could be worse off ) - until my epiphany hits. Am I alone?N

Does it really matter what you do, so long as it pays the bills and you enjoy it?

Well, TSVP, i think it does matter. i think you should spent 2/3 (or 3/4) of your day with sth you enjoy doing, and not sth you stumbled into because the pay is good. Unless you ultimate goal in life is 'to be billionaire as fast as possible - no matter what', just swimming with the flow is the best way to get a mid-life crisis in your thirties....And, Niel, I don't think you are alone. The whole trend around downshifting show that more and more people don't take the rat race anymore and do sth they really enjoy, and might actually earn the same (a good book on this matter, unfortunately so far only German: Rolf Dobelli, "35").good luck

...or Benjamin Kunkel's "Indecision".There's a whole generation of young indecisive people who seem to be doing fine but lack that "something" and keep postponing "real life". It has nothing to do with the industry you work in.

Good grief ! I've been working for 25 years and I still don't know what I REALLY want to do - just a long list of things I don't want to do. And I am not alone....

Hard Reality

I regularly tell my bosses that I do not report into them. I report in fact to my credit card providers, mortgage lender, my wife, my child and all others who expect me to cough up on a regular basis. You often here the argument that you spend X percent of your life working so you should enjoy it. If you are lucky enough to find something well paid that you enjoy, good for you. Most of us find something we can cope with and pays the bills, stick with it. If you want to take a risk down the line, you are far better doing it when you are a few years older and have learned from the mistakes you made at someone else's expense!
