Hi all, A little advice and help needed please. I am currently a senior automotive engineering, working for a consultancy developing engines for OEM's. I have a Master’s degree in automotive engineering and have been working for 4 years. Recently I have been diversifying my engineering role into winning new business with lead clients and expanding these leads into further business opportunities. In short I am interested in moving away from engineering and into business development. I am now researching into a change of career into management consultancy, specifically operations and product development areas. My questions on management consultancy are:• What kind of role would best suit me? – I would like to retain some sort of tie to my existing experience in the automotive sector, if possible. • Which companies could offer me these kind of roles? And how do they stack up to each other? – From reading articles, forum and websites, Mckinsey and PA seem preferable in these areas. • What position could I apply for? • Any tips on how to utilise my past experience in gaining a position in management consultancy? Many thanks in advance, An engineer.

Have you thought about Ricardo? I dealt with them a little a while back and seemed a top outfit.

I made the move from Environmental / civil engineering a few year back. I had a similar level of experience 3yrs and joined the Accenture graduate scheme. They seem to really like engineers, good problem solving skills with good attention to detail etc. Joining a big firm will enable you to try out other industries if you want, but if you're keen to stay in the auto world then you should pick your consultancy carefully so that you get somewhere that has that kind of client base
