I have 9.5 years of experience in IT consulting and process improvements and I dont have a MBA degree. My age is 31 yrsI applied for a senior consultant role in TI and got through the first round. Looking at the threads here it seems like I should have applied for a manager role. Does anyone know what is the average age of a senior consultant and a manager. If i am offered a salary less than i am getting now ,can I negotiate for a higher role .Irrespective of the salary , can I negotiate for a higher role and when is the best time to do that?Does the negotiation happen wit the HR or a someone else?I dont want to waste another 2 years of my life to move into the next role ,if at all I get promoted.Any response will be appreciated .

If they have an equivalent position open at Manager level, you can ask to be considered for that as well. The questioning is mostly the same. I have to say that DC recruiters are fairly good at picking up when someone is applying out of their level and asking whether they'd like to be considered for alternative positions. They did this when I applied.

if i were you, i'd aim for senior manager (if you are hot). i know a coupe of people in their early 30's that are senior managers after moving across from other big 4. worst case you'd be brought down to Manager.

People who apply for Senior Manager posts are generally firmly convinced they fall into that camp. Someone who has applied for a Senior Consultant position is a very long way from a Senior Manager.Experience and track record count for far more than age in this business. In my group, we have a few senior managers in their early 30s, and quite a few senior consultants in their early 30s. We also have quite a few managers in their late 30s.The contrast, at its greatest: we have some senior consultants who are the same age as the partners. That doesn't mean they're the same.

Hi,As my name suggests I have insider knowledge. The SC grade is very wide in terms of age, experience and salary/package. A Manager in consulting is different to a manager in industry. In Consulting, there are sales targets, practice development etcSo you say you were in IT consulting but the difference at Deloitte is that you will be a Management consultant. There is a difference and it is probably this that puts you in the Senior Consultant bracket. If you believe you can generate sales and bring in clients while developing your competency (I assume TI for you) then ask to be brought in as Manager or ask for an early target promotion date (TPD). However if you do the latter you run the risk of not meeting your target objectives and failing to meet your TPD.My advice is to get in the door, bed in and then grow. If you are as good as you insinuate you will be in your first year. Every one would like the title that a promotion brings but it should really be earned. If you came in as Senior Manager and did not perform your reputation would go through the floor and you could loose the respect of not just Senior Management but Managers and Consultants below.Bottom line - If you were SM or M material you would know and not apply for an SC role. Let me know which are of TI you will be joining and I will post a little more useful for you.Bye for now

Thanks all,Hi "I work for deloitte" i am being interviewed for TI-development & Programme management group. I believe I am definitely a manager level person if not sm. Its due to my ignorance that I applied as a senior consultant rather than a manager. My concern is when is the right time to ask them to consider me for a manager role. ofcourse I would presume it should be after they gave an offer or do you think otherwise.

I disagree -- the criteria against which you&apos;re evaluated will be different as a manager vs. SC -- flag it up early would be my advice. Not sure if it&apos;s the same as at my firm, but we have a rule of interviewers being 2+ ranks above interviewees -- so if you&apos;re interviewed by a manager, they&apos;ll need to throw out that interview.

But I am already through to my second round .I was interviewed by a Senior Manager. I have some time left for the second reound .Do you think I can flag it up now ? Another question ;Suppose if they agree to evaluate me as a manager and find worth being a Sr Consultant , will Deloitte still offer me a Sr consultant role ?

Village Twat is right. Flag it up early... I doubt they you will get in as SM but Manager may be possible. The salary bands overlap between SC and M.

I am an SC at Deloitte with 5 1/2 years experience and I will be pushing for Manager promotion this Dec. My advice would be to aim high and flag it early - once you are in you could waste a year pushing for a promotion you might be able to get before you even start. Remember the market is quite hot at the moment, so if you are good you should aim high.

I spoke with the HR and the lady said that we will keep an open mind and will flag it to the assessor that you are looking for manager position. She also said that as of now we are considering you for an SC role. Iam not sure if she will actually flag it and if the assessor will actually evaluate me against the criteria of and SC or a Manager. How do I make sure this happens ?Please advice as My interview is coming up.Thanks

There is a real shortage of women in Deloitte so bear that in mind if and when negotiating. <br>I should also add, if you are a woman.

I am the original poster of the topic .An update . I did not get an offer from Deloitte. They gave a lame excuse which was not at all true in my case .anyways everything happens for the best .Now iam in accenture as a manager(m3) and I am loving it here . I like the culture and it suits me perfectly . What pi***es me off is that our future is in the hands of HR in Deloitte(HR function is oursourced there) who know jack about what we know .In Accenture thats not the case .HR is answerable to the interviewer and its the interviewer who decides if the interviewee fits in the company or not .NOT the HR.I am sure I will get lot of flak from Deloitte guys .but thats my exp. It might differ from others!!

Having been at Deloitte, I can agree that HR are not always up to scratch during recruitment. From my experience interviewing people, HR was not making any decisions, but were simply poor in executing the ones they were given. In our team we made the decisions ourselves. In terms of the reason given being rubbish, it is always better to find out from the person interviewing if possible as HR are not always that switched on. Glad to ehar you are enjoying ACN anyway.

Hi, Good to know about your job at ACN. Best luck with it ! I have a similar concern with accenture consulting. I have arround 10 year of exp with 3 years in Project management. I have been offered C1 with 43-45K at accenture consulting. I surely feel i should have beem in M levels. The HR says they have judge me rightly and is in no position to negotiate.I guess i was offered C1 cause of the salary i quoted at the interview. I made a mistake of quoting some min figure. To me it looks like they offered me the level based on salary. Please advice! Do think C1 with my exp is competative? Thanks in advance !

With 10 Years of exp ,you should be atleas a manager. Said that ,it depends if you exp was in an industry or consulting type organisation. You are absolutely right , they gace you c1 based on your salary and not your exp. That has been my experience after talking to few people .You should negotiate for atleast m1,this also depends on your expertise and the demand in the market . I see no point in you taking up the role as you wont be happy once you join cause you will see many Senior managers your age or less. but if ou think its alright and you cangrow faster than ther people ,ake up the challenge.Hope this helps.
