Hi,Would really appreciate professional advice...I have 10 yrs of IT exp in India and all of my exp has been in Delivery with last few projects having consulting flavor. I enjoyed the high and decided to pursue a career in Consulting given my technical background and my success in those projects. Recently interviewed with Deloitte UK for Con/SCon position in Technology Consulting. After 2 x interviews, assessment centre and 2 x telephone chats, an offer emerged for Con. They have offered me 50K incl benefits for London.Dilemma: I seriously think I am not ready yet to take up a MGR role in co like Deloitte which includes targets and sales pressure, however would want to at least retain my managerial grade with present org. Do cos like Deloitte have a technical growth path at all or one has to eventually take up a MGR role to be able to grow?Secondly, I have serious reservations about the package they have offered me and planning to negotiate for a SCon role. Can anyone pl guide about the salary range for this role? Thanks in anticipation,

10 years of experience you should be aiming for a Manager/Senior Manager type of role ! The package strikes me as a bit low compared to what other big 4 companies are paying. As far as I'm aware you have to take on management roles to be able to progress in consulting. Big 4s tend to have a flat organisation structure when compared to industry, so you have to prove that you're able to meet sales targets and being on the front line when dealing with clients.Honestly, I would negotiate their offer.

Don't evaluate the offer from a 'salary' PoV. Evaluate the offer in terms of how it can progress your career.Take care of your career. The money and benefits and perks will be de facto sorted.

Hi Big_Bad_Baz and CamsterThanks for your replies. I did not push for a MGR now since I don't want the learning curve to be too steep for me - given my non consulting background. Having said that, I negotiated on the salary front and got that to satisfactory levels.Frankly, I want to know in terms of:1. How easy/hard it is for folks from non consulting background to get used to the work culture in big42. Is it possible/supported from a big4 perspective to let their employees develop specialist skill sets?3. Do the big4 offer such specialist growth paths rather than the usual SCON->MGR->SM->DIR, etc...?

I think, contrary to others on here, the C offer is pretty consistent with how Deloitte operates. Although you come from a project background, it's in industry and a lot of people struggle at Mgr grade as that is where on top of the delivery pressure you get a sales target. So, given your 10yrs in industry (and in combination with interview performance) a C offer isn't anything to be concerned about. To answer your other question - Deloitte does have a specialist path - i.e. one that is focussed on technical expertise rather than the typical consulting progression. It's not very popular (or very much advertised) given the business of the company, but may be something to discuss with Deloitte when you join. I believe it's not something that you need to decide on until Mgr level.(C > SC > Mgr)
