I'm 30 Years old. 7 yrs exp. as Oracle tech consultant at 3 big tech firms. What do you think about switching now to Project Mgmt. at a small firm? It perhaps doesn't sound as a very smart move (I might be wrong though), but lately I've been doing boring support projects where I have to deal with boring technical issues and I don't see that my career has been moving forward in that regards. I did a PM certification at a local university last year so I can start getting away from technical stuff and move towards more management things. So a small boutique tech consulting firm is planning to grow in Latin America (where I live) and they want me there as a Senior Project Manager. They have around 300-500 employees worldwide but I would be like the 2nd or 3rd employee in my country. The pros I see: 1) Increase my management skills and learn new stuff. I've been stuck in terms of learning by doing just technical support stuff at this big firm. 2) Over 20% salary increase. 3) If the company really works at Latinamerica, I might grow faster than the slow peace that we find in these big corporates.Cons: 1) The risk that this small firm doesn't get new business and fail with the investment. 2) This firm is barely known, as opposed to the firms where I've worked my whole life. So, should I change to the small company or stay at the big tech firm ?

would the new firm make use of your strong Oracle background? Do you want to keep working as an Oracle expert?
would the new firm make use of your strong Oracle background? Do you want to keep working as an Oracle expert?
1) I'm expert at Oracle CRM systems and on the new firm I will be managing Oracle eCommerce projects. So technically speaking it's different. 2) I don't think so. I don't want to perform more technical stuff.

Does anyone else think PM-ing is becoming increasingly commoditised, methodology driven and therefore much more cheaply achieved with landed offshore resources who are more likely to follow the methodology to the letter anyway and be more successful in QAs?Or is it just me?

I agree. Actually I think one of the main reasons why IT project fails is due to poor project management. Basically we don't know how to manage IT projects properly and methodologies help us on that.On the other side, I think that being PM allows you to show a wider set of skills than a senior technical consultant do, and therefore I would have more paths to move my career forward in the future.
