in it for the travel

Currently studying for a postgrad degree (msc).Have one year experience.I want to get into consulting. Not any consulting. Consulting with sexy travel destinations and lots of travel.I am young so working lots of hours is not a problem for me.My credentials will not allow me to get into the top strat houses. My current understanding is; the larger organisations (IBM, ACN, Cap) will only have national travel, as they can provide employees in the respective countries.Which organisations should I apply to?I'd prefer a firm that would impress on the CV. Would that be wise?Browsing through the forums, I have found ....www.expw.com, any thoughts? Thanks,Steven

Unless you can provide global niche skills or work for a global prestige player (i.e. MBBB) the opportunities for international travel are slim to none in consulting. You actually travel more working in industry. Business development positions for small multinational firms have the greatest chance of travel, although the downsides that were previously mentioned are twice as bad because you don't have anyone to organise your travel for you and are always on a tight travel budget.

There's a lot of international work in Accenture, expecially if you are in Resources and thus dealing with the oil companies like bp. Also if in products a lot of international work with the likes of unilever and even in FS there's the odd trip to zurich. If you make it clear you want to travel the opportunity is there, the novelty soon wears off though.

a sexy location is anywhere that i may be sent to.where i can stay in a nice hotel/flat.hopefully with hot weather, but colder climes are also welcome.Lagos would be cool, if the security was provided.Any major city in the world really.acnture, would it be a good move to work for an oil major for a few years then move into ACN resources?Or straight into ACN?

Just go straight in. Only thing to bare in mind is that they might not put you in resources despite your preference. A lot of that decision appears to be a) down to the business needs and b) completely random.Having said that though, the operating model is changin later in the year meaning you can work in any industry line allowing you a lot more scope to pick overseas projects as it's less about your operating group and more about your skills. If you express an interest in being out of town there's opportunities for sure, even as an analyst. They do a lot of work in India and more recently the Philipines.

Its really not that tough to work out. Look at the locations of companies in a sector, where they put functions within that company, and then who consults to them. So, global investment bank, head offices are in London, New York and sometimes Zurich etc. So if you do strategy in FS, that is where you will be. outsourcing implementation for their back office functions? Go and look at the map- operations is usually somewhere less glamorous. If its offshore, you'll have to go to Manilla, India etc.As for travel being a nightmare- it is. You have to be realistic. Exhausting, depressing, and due to tax restrictions, you probably won't get to invite the girlfriend unless you're paying. And on long term jobs most of us go home monthly, not every weekend. Short term jobs get 5 am starts to get to Heathrow, and enough different airlines that you never quite make the gold card level. But I'm still doing it after 5 years, I wouldn't have it any other way.....

Beth why are you still doing after 5 years?I see the 5am starts and everything else as a challenge.Compared with my 1st degree and my masters, I dont see me losing any amount of sleep and/or social life.I went to bed at 6.15am the other day and was working again by 10am.I'm looking forward to the opportunity of working in different environments.
