I've stuck by my new years resolutions and lost the flab. Now my suits hang on me like I'm a scarecrow. Any refs / tips for a decent tailor in London, who won't charge a fortune? Also, I bought a couple decent suits in the States, and now they look too big in the shoulders, etc.. (American "sack" suit style - not so good in the City) and need to be given a more tailored, refined, British look. Grateful for tips / leads. Thanks.

You might be best off throwing them out. Leaving aside some of the stitching ability to be found in the Far East I'm unconvinced that anyone other than the English or Italians can make consistently decent suits, shirts, ties or shoes.I'm sure Brooks Bros and what have you is decent enough but if these suits are a dodgy cut then I'm not sure how redeemable they will be. When I used to work in the US I was staggered by how awful some people's suits were (waistbands under the armpits, voluminous MC Hammer / Turkish harem trousers, badly constructed shoulders with seams that stuck right out, shapeless jackets) and came to genuinely believe that you would have to go out and look for something so bad in the UK. Even Burtons and Next would do something 100% better. The British 'City' look is so much sharper and smarter that it stood me in good stead a number of times... stories for another time and another place.Where you take them will depend on how much they cost in the first place and how much it is worth spending on them. Redwood & Feller is a good tailor but I wouldn't bother taking a £150 suit there. For a less precious suit and less complicated requirements there is a bloke who looks like Fungus the Bogeyman on Whitecross St EC1 who despite appearances of him and his shop is actually pretty good with a needle and thread.
