How to get in?I consider applying for a job at one of the top mc firms (Bain/Mckinsey). I completed a Master in Finance, did two internships (one at a boutique consulting firm and one at the corporate finance departement of a European bank) and have been active in many side activities during my studies (organisation of international research project, board member of student association, enterpreneurial activities and participation in exchange programs). Though my resume probably does fit recruitment demands, I am concerned about my grades. The average of my grades is far from the top 10% students. The reason for this relative poor average is mainly caused by not focusing on exams, but more on side activities. Do you guys have any ideas how I can get in strategy consulting? During earlier internship experience (with very good evaluations) I know I have the capacities to work in a high demanding environment. I think the hardest problem will be to GET interviews. I would appreciate if you guys can give me some advice,Thanks, K.

K: This is an interesting post. I have a brutal grade (65%) on my MBA transcript in finance, and I feel it blemishes the whole thing. (I finished very well overall, mind you). One way that I have found very helpful is to contact colleagues and build a network of industry peers. They have helped me get in touch with recruiters and land an interview. How could you reframe your experience? Were you building your peer network? Did you take courses that were challenging? Many MBA-class peers veered away from the courses with difficult subject matter, deliberately taking the easy ones to nudge their grades. Could you make a compelling case that you wanted to learn, and that you've been able to further develop your learning by applying it in industry? Just some suggestions. Hope you find them worthwhile, or entertaining, at least.
