I'm in my 2nd year at uni studying historyI've applied for few internships with some big names in consultancy recently, BCG, Accenture and got through both first round of interview but was then unsuccessful in the end. i'm really keen to do something constructive this summer and get some real experience under my belt.all the summer internhsip placement deadlines i know of have already passed.Does anyone have any ideas of how i could go about getting some other consultancy work exerinece....or even better, want to offer me some?! (worth a shot)

I've sat here for a while now in absolute disbelief looking this post. Why? Because you didn't check your entry before you submitted it, even though you are looking to sell yourself into a job.If you don't appear to be bothered to do this properly, why should I assume that you'll be any different in other situations. And I'm sorry to all those who say that this really shouldn't be an issue but it is. It's a question of attitude and this looks careless and seems to display a lack of attention to detail.I just hope I'm ffeding the trolls here

Anon, while it may be too late as you say for a summer internship with one of the big players have you considered:- Any of the smaller consultancies, boutiques etc- Trying to get involved with a start-up business. This may need to be unpaid but is a great one for the CV.- Trying to get involved with some other project based activity where you can get a flavour of responsibility. E.g. work experience 'client-side', or something like VSO.Good luck

Have you looked at Shell's STEP programme?Short-term project leadership work in SMEs and was a good experience for me.

Join the TA, learn some leadership and teamworking skills. Your local unit might be running a summer programme. Employers love it...

TA = Territorial Army = British Army reservesWhich therefore means that you could be called up to fight. As for related links, google the above.

I'd agree with the comment on Shell's STEP programme. I was in a similar situuation to yourself many years ago and ended up getting some really good project experience through this programme. Sure, it's not as glamourous as having a FTSE100 company or an MC firm on your CV but if you get the right project you might learn some valuable and, more importantly, practical skills that are highly transferable.

quan,I love the way you make a banal statement and then hit the return key a couple of times and make such an insightful comment. Two actions points for you:- Look up the meaning of the word irony- 'Google' the phrase 'feeding trolls'

Assistance, I think the point Quan was trying to make was that it looks a little silly if you criticise people for their spelling etc and then make very basic errors yourself. Your lastest post also contains grammatical errors - "Two actions points for you". Just try to be a little more careful in future yeah mate :)

Agree the forces can offer some good work experience, though you'd be better going for the Officer Training Corps or the Navy/ Air Force equivalents. They give you a lot of the teamwork and leadership skills but you won't get called up to go to Iraq. Also, although the TA is very well regarded by many employers, consultancies aren't so keen I've found as you need to give quite a lot of time (there's minimum attendance requirements) and you could get called up and sent away for 6 months right in the middle of projects.
