I would love to say that it is irrelevant, but it isn't. For the normal day-to-day stuff, there generally isn't a major difference, except for the fact that you stand out more, are therefore more memorable, and therefore possibly have to take more care not to slip up. The 'extras' are where it changes - functions where 'token totty' is required to show that the company is an equal opportunities employer, being chosen to attend various events and committees to achieve a gender balance, rather than because you are seen as being up to the task in hand, etc. No bad thing if you are career building, as it does give a greater profile, but it irritates me as I want to achieve these things on the basis of merit.
