I have been working on day rates for last 2 years(£400 per day around 200 chargable days per year). Now planning to return as a staff position. What sort of package I can look for 1.Base Salary2.Benefits3.BonusI have 10 years of industry experience out of that 3 years in operational performance consulting in energy industry. Have MSc and doing Exec MBA in Cranfiled.

200 chargeable days? You don't bother with weekends, holidays and all that rubbish then?

The reality is that the package you will be offered is totally unrelated to your takings as a contractor on a day rate and is likely to be determined by the market for permanent staff and company's payscales. It could be 80K or 50K. Remember a java programmer can make more than £450 a day easily but would generally not be offered a 90K permie package. Also remember that pension benefits, medical and other benefits in permanent employment need to be used for comparison. Also there is a premium for the relative security of permanenet employment ( statuatory redundancy rights etc).Bottom line - contractor rates are determined by demand and supply in the short term market. Permie rates are set by a different market altogether - these are seldom directly comparable. Your approach should be to feel out the market in your area by talking to recruiters but do not use your contractor day rate as a benchmark.

Harry having seen your profile, you could ask for 50K base and 10Kbenefits and 10K bonus, remember you need to compromise some £££ to take a staff position but there is less urcertainity there. All the best
