Whar are peoples thoughts on disclosing disability?I have just got a job in a strategy firm, without disclosing the fact that I am severely dyslexic. I start soon, and am not sure how my colleagues and superiors will feel about it. It does affect my work, but I still managed to get though the selection.Any thoughts would be great!

Firstly I must take my hat off. You must be an extremely talented individual to come through the selection process of a strategy firm with severe dyslexsia. if they have never specifically asked, there is no need to tell them. In fact it is clear that dyslexsia in your case has not acted as a disability. My advice is never to position it as such ( disability) but show your colleagues just how talented you are to be able to cope with the condition and still do better than many others. I would only worry if you have consciously lied about it when specifically asked.Once selected, it is your work that will matter. if you are not able to perform for whatever reason then perhaps strategy consulting is the wrong choice but if you can show that your thinking and analytical approach is not compromised, you should be OK.

Best to be open and honest up front. I would hope firms would not discriminate in any way. Many disabiliities could slow your work down, be it a bad back or dyslexia. In my opion speed of work is not the issue, rather it should be quality. I see a lot of fast work produced but it's crap.Best not to drop "surprises" on people when you join. Most applications forms I've seen ask for information on disabilities, they may ask why you didn't notifty them at that stage.

I would have thought it sensible to tell your employer - they have to make suitable arrangements to facilitate your work, eg allowing extra time, and if your dyslexia does cause problems, you will not have any recompense for lack of employer support if you have not informed them that you do have a disability. I have had to do an internal investiagtion with a previous employer regarding a claim of disability discrimination, and the claim that the employer had not taken appropriate steps; the claimant lost his claim as he had not at any point informed us as to his dyslexia, and other support had been given for his learning difficulties. I would suggest you be honest.
