I am thinking about going into management consulting, but one of the things that is holding me back is the travelling. I could travel in and around London without overnight staying. but no further than that. Is this possible?

Consulting without some overnight stays away is pretty much unheard of. Having a client base that comprises entirely of businesses based in London and the surroundings is also unrealistic. A sensible discussion could be had around which consulting firms make the greatest efforts to ensure you are not away from home more often than necessary - but if your starting point is that you don't want to be away from home at all then I'm really not sure consulting is where you are going to find professional fulfilment.Tony Restell (Top-Consultant.com)

Hello Mr Anon. Have you considered entering financial services consulting? The pay is great and all the clients are in London!Tell us more about your background. We want to help.

Anon II is right - consulting to City institutions is probably the best bet for minimising your travel. But even in an FS practice you are likely to find yourself jetting off to New York or Frankfurt to liase with executives from those offices. Particularly if the bank or institution that's your client is headquartered in say America or Germany. You will be asked to go wherever is necessary to get the job done - and no amount of promises about being based from the London office is going to change that.Tony Restell

Here's another thought: how about joining a consultancy that only does work for central government? There might still be travel but I'm guessing it will be less than is usual. Or even how about becoming an in-house consultant somewhere?

Yes, i have thought about it to. The thing is I do not have consulting experience, I however work at the Global Technology services for one of the big four professional firms and have a good exposure to product, service and business solutions. On top of that i am a natural people person and a "doer". Would consultancies consider hiring me as a consultant without consulting experience? Your thoughts are appreciated.
