If my consulting experience is in energy companies, oil etc. Is it still possible to move into IB either at analyst or associate (with mba) level?Or should I be trying to move to consulting in the financial services?

yes with top mba you can move across as associate. MUST be top MBA.

Thanks Pirlo. On another note, with 1 or 2 years experience would it be possible to leverage a move onto an analyst programme at an IB with this experience or would the mba option be the only way if my experience is not FS based?

Hi Pirlo, Based on previous posts from you. Would you be able to suggest some IB recruiter that is good? Thank you.

Best way to move into I-B from MC, is to get onto an I-Banking project and then work your socks off, impress the client and then they will offer you a job. Thereafter once in, you can then leverage a move to your desired role. Lots of people have gone into Banking via this route.

agree with the above poster. if you are still an analyst / young consultant - you can either 1) try to apply for grad placements and start all over 2) do a top 10 US / top 3 EU mba and then try to get in as an associate. lateral movements between analysts are highly unlikely - unless you are coming out of a McKinsey m&a team

Anon,I don't always agree with everything Pirlo has to say, but what value is there in calling him/her an ass?You can get into IB without a "top MBA" in Pirlo's list (top 10 US/ top 3EU). Go the consultant route and transfer from there - worked for me. And I didn't come from M&A consulting side either.Do the maths: how many IBs are there? how many staff do they have? how many of these staff are in the areas you want to target? how many of these have 'top MBAs'? The answer is likely to be less than 100%.So in response to your Q, yes it is possible. A couple of options have been presented in this thread for you to look at.

Thanks for the advice chaps. I'll keep applying for analyst programmes over the next few years and if it doesn't work out, I'll MBA and try for Associate. My experience in the oil industry rather than FS hopefully wont hinder my chances too much.

Boxershorts, Agreed. Ill reiterate. Generally speaking, to get into a top IB you need a top MBA. Much similary situation to MBBBB.P
