I have an offer from PA consulting as an experienced hire, I was wondering what sort of reputation PA has got in the industry. Are the PA consultants well regarded in the industry? What sort of career prospects can I expect in PA with regards to promotion, etc?I would be grateful for any feedback.

Congrats on the offer. I'm sure the PA Cheerleading Squad will be logging on soon to do their thing. From a non-PA perspective, they're usually seen as OK, but some practices are very weak - Their FS group, for example, has not been successful. If you do a search of this forum you'll see mainly positive views coming from PAers though, particularly on things like work/life balance. They tend not to be as 'flash' as some of the other firms, which can be a nice change. I guess it depends what your priorities are.

Seen as a mid-tier consultancy, direct competitors are the Deloitte's, KPMG's, Accenture's of this world. Career progression is good, very good 360 degree appraisal system and progress is very fair.PA has more a reputation for hands-on operational consultancy and has won plenty of awards for it. Not seen as a glamorous name by any means, though the "pro-PA" crowd on here tend to become vocal when it's needlessly disparaged by persons at equal or even lesser consultancies.

Crabbit, please would you tell me more about PA's FS group and its weaknesses? Many thanks.

I'm not an expert on what PA are up to, but I've interviewed a few PA FS people over the last year or so, and frustration levels seem to be pretty high. It's a very small team, and while the people themselves are actually pretty good, they don't seem to be winning the type or volume of work they aspire to. PA's strengths like in their technology and public sector groups, and FS clients are increasingly sophisticated in selecting their consulting partners. If you want to be an FS expert, you should probably consider one fo the specialist FS firms (capco, ma, troika), or one of the bigger firms with a more established FS group.I may be wrong of course, but if you are sitting on an offer from them, then I see no reason why you can't start asking some questions around their current pipeline of work, the value of work won in the last 12 months, who their key clients are in FS and what type of work have they been doing for those clients.
