Hello Everyone! I'm currently doing a PhD in Chemistry at Imperial and I am an international student. I am very interested in a career in Mgt Consulting esp sustainability/csr and I'm trying to make the right moves towards that. I want to know if the diploma in MC offered by the Institute of MC is of any use to someone new to consulting. Plus, are there any MCs out there that offer short internships esp for PhDs?

Good grief, you posted that followup within 15 minutes of your original post. With so little maturity and self-control I can't see you getting a job anywhere, let alone in a professional services firm. Come back when you've learned how to use punctuation.

You certainly have shown a lot of maturity with your response, RH. Can we lose some of the arrogance on this site? This person obviously has little or no experience of the industry and is just asking for guidance.

Rewind a little. You know your target market, but...do you know the names of the firms you wish to work for?have you been in contact with them?have you applied to them?what did they say?My questions are pretty simple but I'd like you to concentrate on your target and use them to define your choice. You are completing a PHD already and if you are putting off applying until you are a Dr Dip MC you may be taking the long road to avoid reality.MC's are recruited on a matrix of skills, personality traits and qualifications. You can't rely on qualifications alone.Given that you have (probably) spent much of your time in education you may well be better off getting some actual experience rather than another qualification. If you get into consulting any good firm will help you develop the skills and experience required and this will be in a live environment and you will be getting paid! You need to be guided on this by the organisations that you wish to join. I suggest you give them a call.

Impish, having been a member of the IMC previously myself I would suggest it would be a waste of time and effort to take their diploma. This diploma is not recognized as anything by actual Management Consultancies and is used essentially by the IMC as a route to their CMC which is a joke in itself, since this is not academically rigorous, has no adequate pre-requisite threshold, and is basically a sop for formally-unqualified IMC senior members to obtain a designation in leiu of proper qualifications, rather as the IOD is doing with the designation ChD in doling it out to unqualified senior members. The IMC seems to be swiftly becoming absorbed into the Chartered Management Institute anyway and probably will cease to exist separately in due course, Its diploma and the CMC will thus become a relic. As recommended here already, if you have a PhD add the necessary experience. That is all you will need.
