Hi there,I have been offered a place at deloitte consulting, and am going to take it. however I want to take a year out before I start. I was under the impressuion that this was acceptable, but when I spoke to HR, they said it was not usually possible for the consulting graduates to take time off. Is anyone else in the same boat as me, and what are they going to do about it?

I've also been made an offer and have asked to take a year off before starting. The message I got from HR was that this shouldn't be a problem but because there's a new partner in charge (of the Strategy department that I'm going into) he still needs to make a final decision, and I'm still waiting to hear on that. My tactic was to make my case for wanting to take a year off - I want to do a ski season, but its not a wild fantasy as I already have my instructor qualifications, and in the rest of the year I'm planning on spending time in Germany to make sure my German is of business fluency. Whatever you're planning on doing you just have to sell it! Good luck

thanks dan,I said that I was to travel around asia, and basically the rest of the world as well. I also said that I hadn't taken a gap year before I started university, and HR said that this would be a good selling point. Hopefully all will be well. Give us a shout when you find out whether or not you can take you gap year

Sorry to crash your thread with a partly related question. I'm guessing that Deloitte were hoping to fill a certain quota for the year, let say 25 grads for example. What happens if they have 4-5 deferrals for this year intake? Do they start recruiting again?I apologise again, I'm simply wondering as I missed the deadline for applying. Thanks

I can't be sure that what I'm going to say is right, and the only way to get a definitive answer is to ring up HR, won't lose anything by doing so.Anyway, I was told that they were aiming to take 25 grads this year for strategy. I've asked to defer as has someone else to do a masters, add in jim and that's 3 at least. Whether they would continue recruiting to fill those spots I'm not sure, but what I do know is that at least around end of December there were still people who applied for strategy going to interviews (and they had already found 25 people). The question is if they do get an offer whether they get 'bumped' into another area or not. Either way just call.

Dear Jim and Dan,Congrats on your respective graduate offers for Deloitte. May I ask what your uni backgrounds are and what specific departments you have been offered within Deloitte Strat, M&A, CDD ? Did you receive any other comparable offers from any other MC's?

Hi Dan, Jim,I joined Deloitte in September 2005 as a graduate, having applied for entry in Sep 2004 and deferred for a year. They took a little while to confirm it was ok with me too but wasn't a problem in the end. For the record I deferred to do a Masters year at uni - wasn't ready to give up being a student!Good luck with your careers at Deloitte!

C,McKinsey told me that they recruit all year round, the deadline is only to go into the standard milkround. And they have no quota on graduates so there shouldn't be a problem as to when you apply. I applied quite a while ago but due to exams I had to postpone this current interview (which is happening this Friday).
