Hi everyone,I might make a move to Deloitte Startegy as a 4thyear consultant.I have been following this Forum for a while now, and revising it ifeel I am not sure about certain definitions (call it cultural problems).- When you talk about working a lot (for eg at McK or Bain): how many hours per week are we talking about? 60? 70? 80?Related to this question: how many hours per week would one work on average at Del Consulting? (appx, I know this varies hugely depending on project and timing).- Travel involved in consultancy DC?- When o people get their promotions? In my place its Sept (decided in August), but I know there are some places who do it in January.And by the way, any related comments (timetable, promotion timing, travel) with regards to Deloitte Consulting US? I can't answer your specific questions, but I get the impression it's a pretty miserable place to work - i.e. long hours and being treated like a cog in a machine. I met somebody from their HR department recently and her attitude stank of a 'them and us' attitude (sort of, "know your place, employee"). However, I've not worked for them myself, so my own views may not be accurate.The partners are paid a fortune, but don't be suckered in by this. They key point is that THEY get paid a fortune, which probably means that 4th year grunts like you have to work harder to keep the revenue rolling in.

Thanks for that, Anon, I would join in as a Consultant-Senior Cons, so I am more interested in lifestyle issues.I think someone who worked there could easily answer these questions, plus give a nice insight into how things are in the Dept. After all, I dont know about how much the Firm cares about its employees, but I certainly thrive and learn a lot thanks to the people I work with. This brings me to one of the main reasons I am moving: I still feel there's much more to learn (and want to learn it!) and I think decreasing returns has dawned into my learning process in the country where I am currently.Anyone from DC Consulting, please? - I don't work that much. Probably 8.30-6.30 most of the time, with the odd late one, but:- I do travel quite a bit so am no stranger to the 0430 taxi to Heathrow- promotions take effect in Jan, although decided in reviewperiod ending Aug. By exception there are mid year promotions taking effect in Jul.

Really helpful. :)Just one question regarding your info: There are plenty of people coming from the US to work at DC, but I reckon that they get their promotions in the US on August. What happens to them? Do they just have to settle in with no promotion for a year and a half? Notice I am trying to gear here how exceptional are the exceptions you mentioned for promotions after summer, rather than after Xmas. I am puzzled too by that arrangement, since graduates come into the market in Sept, is there any (logical) reason for this?

I think the cycle is geared to the wider firm and fits the standard annual calendar rather than being adjusted to suit the entry point of its graduate intake, which incidentally stems from the historic timing of the harvest, around which the academic year was originally designed. A bit more logical!!No idea what happens to the 'Merkins. I imagine they have to wait until January. July promotions are not all that common.

Actually my last not entirely correct as the review year ends Aug, with promotions not taking effect until Jan - hence it actually brdiges the academic and agricultural throwback date and the calendar date and allows time between the two for all the admin, Christmas, etc.

Can't think of anything else. I think it's a good firm but I don't have much to compare it to (in terms of MC peers) as I came in from industry.In general it seems well run and has some very good people. It is a big firm though and I think experience wil vary considerably from one part to the next. In fact with the partnership structure it sometimes feels like a collection of independent operations / personal fiefdoms.I know a few colleagues who have different 6S belts but as far as I'm aware there is no particular dominant methodology. Not the best person to ask though about this sort of detail as I work in a rather niche part of the firm.
