Hi,To what extent do you make use of consulting methodologies, tools, or research studies in your day-to-day work? For example, do you use assignment management tools and do you have proprietary data or detailed case studies to draw on? To correlate answers to this question, it'd be great to know what type of consulting you do.I appreciate this is a pretty general question. The reason I am asking it is that I have been working as an analyst for about 8 months and have found that where I work we don't have any methodologies to draw on. Research is all by Google and project management is pretty much make it up as you go along - we don't tend to draw on prior work. I was wondering if this was common for consulting.I work in change management for a fairly well-known mid-sized London firm, but am aware that other firms and sectors could be quite different in their approaches.Obviously detailed project planning, Gantt charts, four-box models, etc. are not appropriate to all projects. However, I was expecting a more rigorous approach in a firm of this size and reputation. I'm now trying to "recalibrate my expectations" :-)

Consulting Methodologies are not as widely used as you may have been led to believe. When I first joined what was London’s largest consultancy (over 250 paid full time senior consultants) back in the late 90’s I too was surprised to find that not only did the organisation have no real consistent methodology, they also did not have a consistent diagnostic or orientation process with clients.Because of that I developed what is now know as the Business Improvement Review (BIR) which has been used with 100s of organisations ranging from SME’s to divisions of multinationals.Having all consultants working to a consistent method is not only good for the client but it is good for the branding of the consultancy. As for drawing on prior work this is vital if a consulting organisation is to be a knowledge led or learning organisation. Having one generation of consultants wasting the same time and making the same mistakes as previous just is not good business sense.I wish you well on your journey.Mike MorrisonDirector - RapidBIhttp://www.rapidbi.com – developing you businesshttp://www.f2p.co.uk – developing you
