Isn't an associate usually an external freelancer who often works closely with the firm on agreed commercial terms? Might be different in some firms though so not sure about big 4

That's usually (for a perm hire) an Analyst or Consultant level position, and one more usually associated with Audit and Assurance than Advisory..What's your current experience level? That should clarify this.

ok sounds to me like they have offered you a consultant level role, ie one layer above analyst which would be about right.

Its a analyst / consultant role but probably at the higher end of the grade, typically consultants grade are whose with 1 - 3 years of experience. Then you have senior consultant, manager, senior manager, director and partner.

I do not think so. In KPMG, you have analyst as the lower end level of the hierarchy. Then you have Associate Consultant and then Consultant. KPMG do not have Sr. Consultant profile and therefore, you move to Assistant Manager right after Consultant. Therefore, an Associate Consultant in KPMG is similar to Consultant in Deloitte.
