Hi, I was wondering if it is reasonable to expect the company to pay for travel, when coming from abroad to interview. Has anyone had any experience with this? Whats the best way to broach the topic?

I have had a few interviews abroad and every time they have paid for travel. But you need to get their agreement up-front. Best to be direct and ask from the start, its a reasonable question and in my case they have all agreed.

Best to ask it to HR, asking them to book the travel for you,so you don't breach expense guidelines. In the event that they don't want to / can't book it for you, be direct in asking them about the method of claiming it back. No one really expects you to travel from overseas to a job interview. If they balk at it, I'd query if this is the sort of professional consultancy you want to work for...

Of course a company that has invited you for an interview will pay -- even if you are overseas! You can book your own travel. Why not build in a weekend to get over jetlag staying with a friend or paying your own hotel expenses? You might also choose to stay on a few days at your own expense following the interview to get a sense of the place. Just ask HR exactly what they require to pay your expenses, and what is considered "reasonable." Good luck!
